The Batavia Police Department will participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.The event will be this Saturday, April 30 from 10a.m. until 2p.m.

BPD Detective Sgt. Pat Corona explains:

"Basically it is a program begun last year by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration.) It provides an opportunity for citizens to turn in unwanted prescription drugs, with no questions asked, for proper disposal."

Corona said prescription drugs, originally obtained legally, are as much a problem as so-called street drugs:

"Statistics show that prescriptions drugs are the drug of choice for abuse, even more so than drugs such as cocaine or heroin."

The drug collection will take place in the parking lot of Batavia Police Headquarters.
