Governor Andrew Cuomo has indicated that he would rather not see any toll increases on the New York State Thruway.
Cuomo says toll increases would be detrimental, and avoiding any increases should be the goal. The Thruway Authority board has been considering a 45 percent increase on tolls for trucks, with the goal of raising $90 million in new revenue. The authority promised investors that a toll increase was coming last year when it borrowed $1 billion, raising concerns that no increase could hurt the agency's credit rating. Cuomo says getting creative and aggressive will help avoid a “last resort” toll increase.
The Thruway Authority cancelled two meetings recently expected to address the toll hikes which raised eyebrows, as the agency provided no explanation why.
