Press release from Wyoming County's Animal Control Unit:

Wyoming County’s Animal Control Unit is seeking immediate assistance for the care of 44 small-breed dogs that were abandoned over the weekend in the Town of Middlebury. All of the abandoned animals were found shoved into three separate crates, they are in poor health, have been abused and neglected, and are in immediate need of medical attention. The Wyoming County Animal Control Unit and Sheriff’s Department were responsible for the rescue of the animals early this [Monday] morning. The Animal Control staff and volunteers have been caring for the animals since the rescue.

The animals have varying degrees of health issues, but many have urine scalding, heart murmurs, feces matted into their fur, bad teeth, and mammary tumors. Dr. Ashley Vranich from the Perry Veterinary Clinic in Perry, New York, has been on site to assess each of the abandoned animals. The breeds of animals appear to be pure and mixed breeds of Jack Russell Terriers and Chihuahuas.

Justa Goodell, Wyoming County’s Animal Control Officer, says there is an immediate need for donations and volunteers to assist with this rescue effort. Items that are needed include:

-Rubber gloves

-Clorox

-Shampoo

-Towels

-Small-breed dog food

-Wet dog food

-Volunteers for cleaning the animals

-Available persons or families to adopt the animals once they are healthy and receive a clean bill of health.

The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department assisted the Animal Control Unit with the rescue and have an ongoing investigation into the case.
