Family and friends gathered to honor and relive memories of Derek Sheldon Tuesday night at the intersection where he lost his life. He was killed in a motorcycle accident in LeRoy Sunday.
They say the 19-year-old had a knack for hunting and constantly displayed a bright smile. Stepfather Steve Lashbrook had plenty of warm hunting stories about Derek.
“He was lucky and he was good,” he said, “and that makes a hell of a combination. He had no fear and all the confidence in the world that he was just going to get his birds every day. He didn’t every day – nobody does – but he did it a lot more than an awful lot of us. The kid had a gift, there’s no doubt about it.”
Andy Underhill and Derek would meet up after work and commonly went to each other’s houses.
“Derek lived every second to its fullest,” he said. “There was really never a dull moment with him. He always had a smile from ear to ear. He had a perfect smile.”
Calling hours for Derek are today from 3-7 at the H.E. Turner Funeral Home. The funeral is Thursday at 3 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bergen.
Derek’s girlfriend Ashley Stillwill is listed in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital. She was a passenger on his motorcycle at the time of the crash and has since undergone about 17 hours of surgery.
In an unrelated accident, the Pembroke teenager who lost control of his ATV Saturday and was ejected from the vehicle in Corfu is still in the Trauma ICU unit at ECMC. Benjamin Falker, 16, is listed in critical condition.
