Most area students are on spring break this week, but local districts are releasing their proposed budgets which will go to voters in the next month.

In the Batavia City School District, a $43 million budget plan was approved by the Board of Education – an increase of 3 percent from last year.

Officials were able to reduce the tax levy from just over 3 percent to 1.99 percent.

“We came to this by using some additional state aid we did receive,” Superintendent Chris Dailey said. “But in planning conservatively with the amount of aid the state said we were getting, this spring we found out that the aid for last year was $500,000 less than reported from the state so we’re just being conservative in the amount of aid we do take that the state says we are getting so we don’t have any issues at the end of the next school year.”

The budget going to voters May 20 will also include three capital projects: improvement to the softball field, a new roof for the Richmond Memorial Library and electrical work at the high school gym.

Three softball players and their families sued the district claiming Title IX violations under the 1972 law that stipulates schools receiving federal aid not discriminate on the basis of sex. The boys baseball team plays at Dwyer Stadium which annually hosts the Muckdogs, a professional team. Dailey could not comment more on the lawsuit because it’s ongoing, but said a settlement should be reached soon. The softball field is set to receive new dugouts and bleachers, a fence, a batting cage, an electronic scoreboard and soil replacement.

There will also three board seats up for vote.

In the LeRoy District, the Board of Education approved a $22.6 million dollar budget plan. Superintendent Kim Cox says it will result in a 2.6 percent tax levy increase.

The district got a boost from the state in the form of a gap elimination adjustment reduction, but it’s still receiving $1 million less in state aid than in 2008.

A budget hearing in LeRoy is set for May 13 at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Auditorium.
