The Roz Steiner Art Gallery at Genesee Community College will display “Finding Amal” by artist Muhammad Zaman from January 22 – February 22, 2019. The public is invited to a special artist talk on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. in GCC’s Roz Steiner Art Gallery. Receptions will follow at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. where guests can view the exhibit and meet Zaman.
“Finding Amal” features compositions of urban calligraphy that combine the three languages of the artist’s culture, Arabic, English and Bangla. Each canvas expresses a word, phrase or concept as if they were messages dedicated to the entire human race. The works contain words in these three languages, always with at least one recognizable word sparking a curiosity in the viewer. The desire to decode the work’s message leads to a deep connection with Zaman’s art.
Aiming always to unite people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions, Zaman has had exhibitions around the world as well as the United States. His pieces are in private collections in Paris, France; Lisbon, Portugal; New York City and Buffalo, New York.
The Roz Steiner Art Gallery is open to the public Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery is also open during special events as published at www.genesee.edu/campuslife/arts. Admission is free. For more information, contact Gallery Coordinator Mary Jo Whitman at (585) 343-0055 ext. 6490, or via email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
