A heat advisory remains in effect today till 8pm in Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Wayne, Monroe, Ontario and Yates counties.  A heat advisory is issued when the combination of air temperature and relative humidity make the apparent air temperature ‘feel like’ 95 to 99 degrees.  Remember to use air conditioning or a fan when possible. Try to avoid direct sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. if possible. Wear light colored clothing.  Drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity during the peak heat of the day. Check on the pets and make sure they have plenty to drink as well.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown says he isn’t done with the election yet after losing the democrat primary last week to socialist nurse India Walton who is slated to become Buffalo’s first female mayor.  “There are two phases of every election, a primary and a general election,” said Brown. “This election isn’t over. I’m running as a write-in candidate, and I am running to win this election. I am the person that has served this city in this capacity for 15 years.”

The department of homeland Security and emergency services and the state office of fire prevention and control released a warning about using fireworks coming up to 4th of July.  They urge New Yorkers to use sparkling devices responsibly and remind people that it is illegal for people under 18 years of age to use sparkling devices.  The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates approximately 10,000 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with fireworks in 2019. Almost three-quarter of injuries occurred during a one-month period around the Fourth of July.

The New York State Department of Health announced Tuesday a temporary increase for the state’s Women, Infants and Children nutrition program’s fruit and vegetable benefit.  Officials say the fruit and vegetable benefit will increase from $9 a month for children and $11 a month for women, to $35 a month per participant. The state began the increase June 1 and it will continue until September 30.

Early Monday morning there was a porch fire on Gilhooly rd that was reported to have been quenched by 4am and then rekindled again around 11am.  It now seems that that was an error.  The house was fully involved and not just a porch fire.  It is being declared a total loss.  All occupants were able to get out of the residence in the early morning.  The challenge that the fire departments of Alexander, Batavia, Bethany, Darien, East Pembroke, Stafford and Pavilion had was the lack of access to water.  Alexander Fire Chief Marshal Merle Requested additional tankers to the scene and 2 engines pulled water from a nearby pond.  The cause of the fire which is believed to have started inside the house is under investigation.

Starting tomorrow the Genesee County Farmers Market is starting a program called Double Up Food Bucks.  This program benefits SNAP recipients.  How it works is if a person spends 20 SNAP bucks at the farmers market they will receive 20 dollars in DUFB Silver coins.  You can redeem your SNAP bucks at the market kiosk for wooden SNAP tokens.  The silver coins are good for fruits and vegetables and the SNAP tokens are good for any SNAP eligible item.
