Officials within the Catholic Church are calling for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s excommunication, following the passing of legislation aimed at expanding on abortion rights. Several bishops throughout the U.S. have suggested such an action could be warranted, noting in particular that Governor Cuomo celebrated the bill’s signing, and ordered landmarks lit up in pink to mark the occasion. The legislation allows for abortions in the third trimester, provided the “life or health” of the mother is at risk. Meanwhile, Archbishop of New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan suggested through a spokesman that excommunication was unlikely, and that the act shouldn’t be used as a weapon.
