Victim of Fatal Evans Street Fire Identified

An early morning fire at 109 Evans Street in Batavia has claimed one life and rendered two-story single family home uninhabitable.
The victim has been identified as John Sherman Sr., 41, who lived in the house.
The fire was visible from the main City of Batavia fire station located just up the street..

Fire Captain Robert Fix said there were at least seven people in the single family home at the time of the fire. He said some of the seven were visitors.

CPR was performed on Sherman as he was taken to UMMC in critical condition. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.
Batavia Fire Chief Stefano Napolitano said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The visitors and all other occupants other had escaped the flames when first responders reached the scene.
All on and off duty city firemen were on scene. Fix said the fire occurred at shift change so there were more firefighters than usual at the station
Fix said two dogs and a cat also safely escaped
