Press Release:

The BCSD Foundation, lnc.’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce the first recipients of the BCSD Foundation Apple award.

Jessica Torrey, a 1st grade teacher at Jackson Primary, was described by the Chua family as “a phenomenal teacher who makes every child feel like a star. Academics are only one part of her expertise. She inspires the children to reach their goals and not to set them low. Whether the student is struggling or excelling, Jessica can meet them there and bring them to the next level. She is another mother to her little friends and when the school year ends each one knows he or she means the world to Mrs. Torrey and she will always mean the world to them. As a parent, I felt like I was giving my son to a person each day who loved him as much as I do and could see everything that he had that lit up the room…and she made him shine.”

Mrs. Sarah Gahagan and Mrs. Lindsey Leone are advisors for the B-Squad at Batavia Middle School. The boys’ parents nominated these coaches and described them as educators who “go above and beyond the classroom duties to lead this group of boys to a healthier way of living. The running schedule prepared for the boys allows them to meet with local business owners and learn about what it takes to be successful. We want to thank them for all they do for our sons and for their time and dedication to improving their futures.”

Mrs. Bobbi Norton, Executive Assistant to the Superintendent and Clerk to the Board of Education, was nominated by the members of the BCSD Board of Education as she retires at the end of the month (after 40 years of dedication to the Batavia City School District). Mrs. Norton was described as being “very helpful and has always been spoken of highly.” Mr. Burk thanked her “for being so supportive and wonderful to our students” adding that “she is extremely talented and is a dear friend.”

The BCSD Foundation Apple award is given by a member of the school and/or local community to a Batavia City School District employee or volunteer. In the opinion of those giving the honor of this distinction, the awardee has gone above and beyond in their role and is being recognized by one or more people for these accomplishments.

Local artist, Mark Jensen, will be making each individual resin apple — none will be exactly the same. If you are interested in giving a Foundation Apple award, please sbumit your nomination form and $75 (payable to the BCSD Foundation, Inc. 260 State Street, Batavia NY 14020 att: Allison Chua).
