City of Batavia Names New Assistant City Manager
The City of Batavia has announced the appointment of Police Chief Shawn Heubusch as its new Assistant City Manager. Heubusch will step into the role on December 1st, following a comprehensive candidate search and recruitment process.
City Manager Rachael Tabelski praised Heubusch’s “commitment to public service, strategic thinking, and proven leadership,” noting his critical role in overseeing city departments and advancing key initiatives.
Heubusch has served as Batavia’s Police Chief for the past 13 years, capping a 25-year career in municipal public safety. He led the department through major challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and statewide criminal justice reforms.
He also revitalized programs like the bicycle patrol, re-established the K-9 unit, and launched initiatives such as the mentor program for new officers and the School Resource Officer Program.
A past president of the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police, Heubusch lives in Pavilion with his wife and is a 2019 graduate of Leadership Genesee.

Batavia PD Reminds of Pet Safety
As summer temperatures continue to rise, the Batavia Police Department is urging the public not to leave pets unattended in vehicles. Even on mild days, a parked car can quickly become a death trap for animals.
On a 70-degree day, the inside of a car can hit 104 degrees in just 30 minutes. On a 90-degree day, it can spike to 129 degrees in just 10. Heatstroke can set in within 15 minutes—even if the windows are cracked.
Dogs, in particular, struggle to regulate their body temperature, making them highly vulnerable. The consequences can be tragic, but they are also completely preventable.
The message is simple: if you’re stepping away from your car, leave your pet at home where it’s safe and cool.
And if you see an animal left alone in a vehicle, don’t wait—call 911 immediately. Your actions could save a life. Let’s all do our part to keep our furry companions safe this summer.
