Five Graduate from First Genesee Valley Welding Boot Camp

The first-ever Genesee Valley Welding Pre-Apprenticeship Boot Camp has wrapped up, with five participants graduating Thursday in Batavia.
The six-week program combined free classroom instruction at Genesee Valley BOCES with paid, on-the-job training at local advanced manufacturing companies, including Oxbo, Graham, and Gorbel.
Organizers say the “earn while you learn” model prepares students for high-demand manufacturing careers, with many graduates moving into full-time jobs or registered apprenticeships.
RTMA Director of Workforce Development Rich Turner says the mix of hands-on training and real-world work is “the best way for students to earn while they learn.”
The program was funded through a SUNY Pre-Apprenticeship Grant and supported by local workforce and economic development agencies.

EDP Unveils $117 Million Solar Project in Genesee County

Howard Owens with the Batavian reports, EDP Renewables North America introduced plans for the $117 million Alabama Solar Park, spanning 550 acres across three towns, at an informational meeting at the Oakfield Fire Hall.
Residents raised concerns over farmland loss, the growing number of solar farms, and long-term impacts on property values. Oakfield resident and former legislator Ray Cianfrini questioned why Genesee County hosts so many projects.
Project Manager Rachel Smith emphasized efforts to minimize environmental and community impact, noting panel placement avoids wetlands and cultural resources. The park will generate 134 megawatts, enough to power 40,000 homes, create 250 construction jobs, and provide $65 million to landowners and $25 million to local governments.
Smith explained state law requires a public comment period, intervenor funding, and a decommissioning bond to protect communities. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, pending final approval. The company stressed ongoing engagement with residents to address concerns and ensure benefits for the local area.
