2018 GCC men’s soccer team

Press Release:

If history repeats itself, the top-ranked Genesee Community College men’s soccer team’s first loss in over a year may be a blessing in disguise with the Cougars earning a split at the Tom Bichy Tournament in Boyds, Maryland this past weekend.

The Cougars opened the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Mt. San Antonio College (Walnut, Ca.) Sept. 8 and then beat Prince George’s Community College (Largo, Md.) 4-0 the next day to earn the weekend split. The loss ended a 13-game winning streak extended from last season, as well as a 22-game unbeaten string.

Genesee went about 370 days between losses with its previous one coming to Camden County Sept. 3, 2017 in double overtime in the same Bichy Tournament by a same 2-1 score. That loss may have dropped the Cougars in the rankings last year, but it allowed the team to make the adjustments it needed for a successful national championship run that included facing that same Camden County team in the national championship semifinals with obviously different results.

In the Cougars’ weekend win against Prince George’s, Rodrigo Albuquerque scored the team’s first three goals and Sam Hall added a fourth for the Cougars in the 4-0 win. Due to weather, the normal 90-minute contest ended after 70. Shahin Tahir Nasabi, Jose Manoel Cavalini and Ed Port all recorded assists on the day. Cougar goalkeeper Adrian Bergman recorded one save in the win.
Genesee out-shot the Owls 11-5, with seven Cougar shots finding the net.

Against Mt. Sac, Albuquerque scored the lone Cougar goal from three Genesee team shots, while Bergman recorded five saves in net in a defensive showdown.
