GCSO: Three car crash in Corfu

The Genesee County Sheriffs Office is investigating a three car motor vehicle accident that occurred on Route 33 in the area of 58 West Main Street in the Village of Corfu. The Genesee County Emergency Dispatch Center received the 9-1-1 call reporting the personal injury accident at 5:02 PM.
Upon arrival, patrols identified operators of all three vehicles. The first vehicle involved was a 2009 Honda Civic traveling westbound operated by a James M. Hoskins of Corfu, NY. The second vehicle involved was a 2008 Hyundai Sonata also traveling westbound operated by a Jacob J. Szumigala of Oakfield, NY. The third and final vehicle was a 2018 GMC Canyon traveling eastbound operated by Gerald D. Sanders with passenger, Lynn Sanders of Batavia, NY.
The 2008 Hyundai approached the 2009 Honda from behind at a high rate of speed, striking the rear end of the Honda. The impact sent the Honda into the eastbound lane and was struck by the oncoming 2018 GMC Canyon. The Hyundai operated by Szumigala continued west, coming to rest along the south shoulder of Route 33.
Szumigala was found to be under the influence of alcohol/ drugs. Szumigala was subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated and transported to Erie County Medical Center for minor injuries. Several charges are pending following the results of a toxicology report of Szumigala’ s blood and a full investigation is completed. The occupants of the other vehicles were also transported to Erie County Medical Center for injuries sustained during the motor vehicle crash.
The crash was investigated by Undersheriff Gregory Walker, Chief Joseph Graff, Sergeant Jason Saile, Sergeant Andrew Hale, Deputies Kyle Krzemien and Robert Henning. Assisting at the scene were members of the Corfu Fire Department, Mercy EMS, and Ron and Newts Towing Agency.
