Baskin Livestock Review Continues

Joanne Beck with the Batavian reports, the City of Batavia Planning and Development Committee spent Tuesday night reviewing the environmental impacts of Bill Baskin’s proposal to rebuild his livestock facility on Howard Street, destroyed by fire last fall.
Consultant Joshua Rogers of Wendel Companies explained that this was part two of a three-part review. Several issues were flagged as “moderate to large,” including wetlands, floodplain concerns, truck traffic, and air emissions. Because of possible chemical releases, the state DEC will require Baskin to obtain a major air facility permit, a process that could take months.
Neighbors voiced concerns about odors, traffic, and health impacts for families living near the site and along the Ellicott Trail.
The committee voted unanimously to approve parts one and two of the environmental assessment. A final part three will be prepared for review in September, when the board will decide if the project poses any significant impacts.

Small, personal batteries for home backup or emergency use would not be affected.
The measure comes as the state investigates several battery fires and issues updated safety recommendations. Applicants who face hardship under the moratorium may request a hearing before the board for a possible exemption, and violations of the law could carry fines or other penalties.

Vice President Kevin Zito explained why the group decided on this cause. He said while they had already planned one charity ride earlier this year for Disabled American Veterans, a personal experience at Crossroads House made him realize just how important the facility is. He told the group that many of their members had also been touched by the care Crossroads House provides, and they unanimously agreed to hold an additional ride in its honor.
The ride began at 11 Liberty Street, with 15 patched members of the new riding club leading the way and several stops along the route. Organizers say the next ride is already in the works, set to benefit “Shop with a Cop” this fall.

Batavia PD Reminds of Pet Safety

As summer temperatures continue to rise, the Batavia Police Department is urging the public not to leave pets unattended in vehicles. Even on mild days, a parked car can quickly become a death trap for animals.
On a 70-degree day, the inside of a car can hit 104 degrees in just 30 minutes. On a 90-degree day, it can spike to 129 degrees in just 10. Heatstroke can set in within 15 minutes—even if the windows are cracked.
Dogs, in particular, struggle to regulate their body temperature, making them highly vulnerable. The consequences can be tragic, but they are also completely preventable.
The message is simple: if you’re stepping away from your car, leave your pet at home where it’s safe and cool.
And if you see an animal left alone in a vehicle, don’t wait—call 911 immediately. Your actions could save a life. Let’s all do our part to keep our furry companions safe this summer.
