Fire Chief Stefano Napolitano

Batavia’s City Fire Chief Steve Napolitano says the department has an 11.4 percent spending reduction over last year.
He says that now that the department is fully staffed with six new recruits, they are not having to pay overtime and training costs.
Napolitano is looking down the road to replace fire Engine 12 that is 15 years old, however his next priority is replacing old turnout gear…

The Chief said the replacement program helps ease what could be a large expense by the city.
The total budget for Batavia’s City Fire Department is around $3.6 million.

Lindsay A. Gerhardt, GCC’s new assistant dean of Admissions and Recruitment

Genesee Community College is pleased to announce the appointment of Lindsay A. Gerhardt as the new assistant dean of Admissions and Recruitment. Gerhardt will be responsible for the administration of college admissions and recruitment efforts, overseeing a team of recruitment specialists who travel extensively across the Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming County region, as well as to Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, New York City area, and occasionally internationally.

Gerhardt comes to GCC after eleven years of service at SUNY Geneseo in progressively more demanding admissions roles, culminating as the associate director. She served on numerous committees at Geneseo, among them: President’s Commission on Diversity and Community; Enrollment Marketing Strategy Team, Equity Scorecard; and the Scholarship Committee. She also worked Alfred University as an admissions counselor, where she was recognized as the #1 Recruiter in 2005-2006.

“Lindsay is a solid addition to our already fantastic Admissions and Recruitment team,” Dr. Virginia (Ginny) Taylor, vice president of Student and Enrollment Services said. “Her professional experience and obvious dedication to student success aligns perfectly with our student success coaching model and with GCC’s student-centered philosophy to higher education.”

Gerhardt first cultivated her love of education during her four years as a teacher in Rochester. Since 2007, she has been very involved in the New York State Transfer and Articulation Association – a non-profit professional organization dedicated to the promotion and mobility of transfer students in higher education. She has served as a member of the NYSTAA executive board, newsletter committee and annual conference co-chair. In 2014, she received the New York State Transfer and Articulation Association Distinguished Service Award.

Gerhardt earned her M.S. Ed. in Literary Education from Nazareth College of Rochester in 2006, and her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Mercyhurst University in 2002. A Rochester native, Gerhardt currently resides in North Chili with her family.

Registration for Girls Fastpitch Softball this Saturday, February 17th 2018

Batavia, NY, February 13, 2018: After a successful inaugural season in 2017, Batavia Girls Fastpitch Softball (also known as the Batavia Stingers) is excited to announce that we will be hosting a registration day at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Batavia. The registration will take place on Saturday, February 17, 2018 from 10 am – 2 pm. Sign-ups will be for teams in the 10u, 12u and 15u divisions. Registration is open to girls that live in the City or Town of Batavia or who attend school in Batavia. Board members and coaches will be present to answer questions. The registration fee of $75 is not due until April 1, 2018. The 10u and 12u teams begin practice in April with games beginning in May. The 15u seaon will begin in June and games will be held from July to the beginning of August.

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) rises to introduce a reform on Messages of Necessity in the Assembly Chamber.

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) proposed a measure on the Assembly floor today that would require a two-thirds vote of the house for Messages of Necessity to be accepted when issued by the governor.

“Too often, controversial measures are rushed through the legislative process in the middle of the night without adhering to the constitutionally-mandated, three-day ‘aging’ process,” Hawley said. “This is the people’s government and they have a right to know what bills are being passed with a high level of transparency.”

Legislation is usually subject to an “aging” period of three days before it can be voted on. However, Messages of Necessity are issued by the governor to forgo this process and rush a vote on important and/or controversial legislation, as was done with the SAFE Act.

“Messages of Necessity rob the public of the right to know what’s in a bill as was the case when the unconstitutional SAFE Act was rammed through the Legislature leaving many lawmakers no time to actually read the legislation that was to be voted upon,” Hawley continued. “I am disappointed that this and over a dozen other common-sense ethics reforms were voted down by New York City Democrats. Our citizens deserve better.”

Batavia City Council has approved a lease with the Community Theatre allowing them to re-locate in the City Centre Mall by an overwhelming vote of 7 – 1.
Councilman at-large Bob Bialkowski was the only member opposed to the lease.
He did not feel it is the right business for the city to be in and said there were too many inaccuracies in the lease.
Councilwoman Patti Pacino was optimistic that the Batavia Players Theatre would be an attraction to bring people downtown…

According to the lease for the first six months Batavia players would only pay rent of $1 per sq. ft., then $2 per sq. ft. for the next six months and $4 per sq. ft. after that.
The location was most recently occupied by the Dent Neurological Clinic.

Two Batavia residents busted for DWI, with one accused of driving drunk to the State Police Barracks.

State Police stopped 60 year old Jay Markle of Batavia for speeding on State Route 33 in Bergen on Monday.
After failing field sobriety tests he was arrested for DWI.
After being released with appearance tickets, Markle contacted 58 year old Darlene Martaus, also of Batavia, to come pick him up at the barracks.
Troopers could detect the odor of alcohol on her breath when she arrived at the barracks.
After performing field sobriety tests Martaus was arrested for felony DWI, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Operating a Vehicle Without an Interlock Device, and other Vehicle and Traffic infractions.
She was committed to the Genesee County Jail in lieu of bail.

Fraudulent vehicle purchase in Batavia leads to the arrest of Holley woman.
59 year old Linda Feeley of Hulberton Road in Holley was accused of conspiring with her boyfriend and a car salesman to facilitate a sale by forging her mother’s name on documentation to purchase a vehicle.
Following investigation into the alleged incident last March Feeley was arrested and charged with a litany of felony charges including counts of Grand Larceny, Identity theft, Forgery and Conspiracy.
She was issued an order of protection and was released with appearance tickets for March 13th in Batavia Town Court.

A Promise from P.W. Minors new owner to keep jobs in Batavia.
Hundley Elliotte, the new CEO of P.W. Minor is not looking at layoffs at P.W. Minor but implementing a process of production that eliminates waste and increases productivity.
Elliotte plans on growing Batavia’s oldest company by making the production process as efficient as possible.
Elliotte is a partner with Tidewater and Associates, the investment company that acquired P.W. Minor from Pete Zeliff earlier this month.

The Chief of Police in the Livingston County community of Nunda calls it the worst case of child abuse he’s ever seen.
35 year old Brock Hyde of Nunda, has been charged with beating his two month old son.
Nunda Police Chief Jeff Wilcox said the child suffered a fractured skull, broken ribs and a broken foot.
Hyde of is charged with felony counts of Assault and Reckless Assault of a Child for the alleged abuse.
The child was released to foster care.

Two Batavia men arrested for possession of suspect heroin suspected heroin in Wyoming County.
32 year old Ian Leblanc-Chatt and his passenger in his car, 39 year old Jason Giuliani, both of Batavia, were stopped on Route 19 in Middlebury.
Deputies say found Giuliani was in possession of 60 bags of heroin and Leblanc-Chatt had of two bags of heroin,
Leblanc-Chatt was also accused of driving while ability impaired by a combination of drugs.
Giuliani was arrested on a felony drug charge and jailed in lieu of 25- thousand dollars bail.

Governor Cuomo is trying to help low-income kids get the flu shot.
He has proposed legislation that encourages pharmacists to enroll in the state’s vaccine for children program.
If passed, children older than two-years-old and younger than 19 who meet certain criteria would be eligible for a free flu shot.
The state’s commissioner of health says more folks are taking this flu season seriously this year and getting the shot.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is introducing a new member to his administration. The Governor welcomed a 14-week-old Siberian Shepherd puppy to the Capital this week. His name is Captain, although Cuomo says he originally wanted to name the dog Excelsior, after the state motto. Cuomo’s daughter is to thank for making the strong suggestion of an administration mascot.

Members of Wayne Fuller’s three distinct families bid final farewell to the man who touched the lives of so many throughout Western New York.

Wayne was remembered by close friends from his background in sports, broadcasting and mass transit.

Fuller, 70, died last Friday after a long illness.

Memories of Wayne were shared by his former co-workers in radio, Batavia Muckdogs baseball and Trailways Bus of which shaped the life of this popular Batavia native.

It was Wayne’s wish that his casket be carried aboard a Trailways bus to his final resting place next to his parents in East Bethany Cemetery. Dozens of mourners rode the same bus to the grave site.

Nunda Police report a chilling case of child abuse against an infant.
Investigators from the Nunda Police Department in Livingston County are calling it “a horrific case of child abuse” referring to a two month old baby boy who was allegedly beaten severely by his father.
35 year old Brock Hyde of Nunda, has been arrested and charged with felony counts of Assault and Reckless Assault of a Child for the alleged abuse.

The child also sustained dual eye retinal hemorrhages, fluid and swelling on the brain along with a broken bone in their foot.
The child was released to foster care.
Hyde who is a parolee from August of 2014 was committed to the Livingston County jail pending arraignment this morning.

Two Batavia men busted with drugs Wyoming County.
Wyoming County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped 32 year old Ian Leblanc-Chatt and his passenger 39 year old Jason Giuliani, both of Batavia, on State Route 19 in Middlebury Sunday.

Livingston County Woman accused of taking benefits from a cancer patient.
32 year old Patty Wilkins of Nunda was arrested and charged with 4 counts of Petit Larceny during an investigation into a Scheme to Defraud case stemming from a benefit last November.
Wilkins allegedly set up a benefit for a cancer victim in Nunda and pocketed a few hundred dollars from the event after promising to give out prizes to winners which she never did.
She was released with appearance tickets.

Eleven extraordinary students are on track to finish high school while earning an associate degree from Genesee Community College this summer. Triton Adamski (Pembroke), Carrie Hathaway (Geneseo), Trevor Fitzgibbon (Alden), Tara Jagodzinski (Pavilion), Shaun LoVerdi (Byron-Bergen), Jacob McQueen (Attica), Taylor Nusstein (Attica), Justina Pruski (Oakfield-Alabama), Kiara Santiago (Pembroke), Chloe Schrier (Pavilion) and Nicholas Ventola (Pembroke) finished the fall 2017 semester on track to complete an associate degree shortly after they graduate from high school this summer. While all of the graduating students have performed extraordinarily well in their college courses, Triton, Carrie, Justina and Kiara have maintained perfect 4.0 averages throughout the entire multi-year Math Science Preparatory / Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (MSP/STEM) program.

Since middle school, these extraordinary students have been immersed in college level coursework, and GCC is currently inviting the next cohort of students to join the MSP/STEM program that provides this pathway to exciting opportunities.

Each year, all Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming County region middle schools are invited to nominate their top 6th and 7th grade students for GCC’s MSP/STEM enrichment program. The affordable two-year preparatory program was developed for the unique needs of gifted students and is staffed by GCC’s full-time math and science faculty. The MSP Program offers an opportunity for middle school students to earn up to 10 college credits before they enter high school and at one-third the usual tuition cost.

Middle schools have already begun distributing invitations to students and placement testing reservations are currently underway, however, there is still time to apply. All interested parents and students are encouraged to request information about the nomination process and program through GCC’s ACE Program or with their school counselor.

On March 7, 2018, Kristine McCarthy will be part of Genesee Community College’s Fashion Business Speaker Series sharing her inspiring story of dedication, hard work and success. McCarthy currently serves as a senior vice president, operations lead at P.W. Minor. P.W. Minor has been making shoes in America since 1867 and operates the second oldest shoe factory in the country.

McCarthy’s presentation will take place in room T102 of GCC’s Conable Technology Building at the Batavia Campus from 1 – 2:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public; however seating is limited. McCarthy said, “Believing that anything is possible and not backing down from any challenge, I have delivered consistent results throughout my career on a global scale and I am proud of the work I do every day.”

McCarthy graduated from GCC in 2001 with an Associate Degree in Fashion Merchandising and then transferred to Buffalo State College to earn her Bachelor of Science in Fashion Textile Technology in 2003. After 12 years in NYC, McCarthy currently lives in Batavia with her husband Brian McCarthy (also a 2001 GCC graduate) and their two sons, Jack and Ronan.

Who: Anyone planning to take the SAT Exam

Background: The BEST (Business and Employee Skills Training) Center at Genesee Community College will host the first of only three SAT Prep courses in Warsaw and the registration deadline is February 22, 2018. The SAT Prep course is designed to prepare students for the English and Math components of the SAT exam. The course familiarizes students with the format of the exam and provides practice using questions similar to those that will appear on the SAT. In preparation for the English component, course participants will practice critical reading, sentence completion, grammar usage and writing. The Math component practice will focus on pre-algebra, algebra and geometry.

The SAT Prep course consists of six sessions totaling 18 hours and costs $149.00 per participant which includes the course prep textbook. Participants are required to bring their own calculators.

The first SAT Prep course session will be at GCC’s Warsaw Campus Center – 115 Linwood Ave, Warsaw, NY. The course will run on Thursday evenings beginning March 1, 2018 through April 12, 2018 from 6 – 9 p.m. (no class on April 5). Participants MUST register by February 22, 2018 to attend.

The BEST Center will also offer the SAT Prep course at:

Tuesday evenings beginning March 20, 2018 through May 1, 2018 from 6 – 9 p.m. (No class on April 3). Register for this session by

Who: Anyone looking for some help enrolling in college!

Background: The Adult Educational Opportunity Center (AEOC) is continuing its year-long schedule of open monthly sessions designed to get anyone started on their way to a college degree!

As with all AEOC services, these sessions are FREE and available both by appointment and walk-in! During these sessions, the AEOC’s outreach specialists will help potential college applicants with a variety of services, including:

• Financial Aid Counseling: help completing the FAFSA, understanding various financial aid options including student loans and Pell grants, retrieving transcripts, and assistance with special circumstance applications.

• Enrollment Assistance: completing college applications or enrollment forms, ACT Test registration and completing Entrance Exam Prep through Accuplacer.

• Veterans Services: AEOC outreach specialists are trained to assist any veteran in navigating services available for higher education.

Both appointment and walk-in sessions will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 and Wednesday, March 21, 2018. Appointments are also available on additional dates by request. Traffic stop in Wyoming County leads to the arrest of two Batavia residents.

Wyoming County Sheriff’s Deputies conducted a traffic stop on State Route 19 at Main Street in the Village of Middlebury yesterday.

The driver was identified as 32 year old Ian Leblanc-Chatt and the passenger as 39 year old Jason Giuliani both of Batavia.

Deputies allegedly found Giulani in possession of 60 bags of heroin and Leblanc-Chatt was allegedly in possession of two bags of heroin, Suboxone and three hypodermic syringes.

Following a drug evaluation Leblanc-Chatt was also accused of driving while ability impaired by a combination of drugs.

Giuliani was subsequently arrested and charged with a felony count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with intent to sell it and jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Leblanc-Chatt was charged with DWAI by drugs, along with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and of a Hypodermic Instrument along with traffic infractions.

He was released to a family member and both men are due back in court on March 26th.

Notre Dame announces the hiring of Tim Frappa of Orchard Park as their new Varsity Softball Coach. He places Michelle Panepento who decided not to return in order to spend more time with her family. His impressive resume, love of teaching the game of softball and his personality led to his selection from an impressive group of applicants.

Tim has been an extremely successful travel softball coach in the Buffalo area for the past 10 years. For the last three seasons, he coached the NY Inferno 16U and 18U college showcase teams where he has helped players realize their goal of playing college softball. He is recognized as an excellent teacher of fundamentals and is especially strong in the development of pitchers including two daughters who went on to pitch in college.

Coach Frappa, Who is the Founder and President of Torino Mosaic Flooring, is excited about the opportunity to coach the young ladies of Notre Dame softball and is looking forward to the challenge of building on the success the program has enjoyed in recent years.

Second Half Surge Powers Men’s Basketball Team over Jamestown

The Genesee Community College men’s basketball team improved their shooting percentage from the floor by almost 20 percent in the second half and in the process out-scored visiting Jamestown Community College after the intermission by a 51-40 margin for the Western New York Athletic Conference victory.

After holding just a single point lead after the first half at 43-42, Genesee turned it up in the second half and when the horn sounded Caylen Williams and Brian Fobbs both had points totals in the 30s.

Jamestown took an early lead in the second half and the two teams exchanged leads with the Jayhawks’ last lead at 59-58 about seven minutes into the second half. From that point the Cougars went on a 12-3 run that put them ahead 70-62 midway through the second and Jamestown never got within five points from that point until the end of the game.

Williams had a season-high 35 points and also led the team in steals with three, while adding six assists and four boards. Fobbs recorded yet another double-double with 30 points and 10 boards.

Fobbs was able to obtain sole possession of eighth place on the team’s all-time scoring list with his performance that padded his career-point total to 1,138 and three more than Brian Jackson’s 1,135.

Fobbs also continues to dominate national statistics among all National Junior College Athletic Association D-II players in points-per-game with 27.2 and rebounds-per-game with 13.5. Only one other player – from Lake County – is ranked with Fobbs in the top-10 of the two aforementioned categories.

The Genesee Community College women’s basketball team played visiting Jamestown Community College within a pair of scores during the game’s final three quarters, but Jamestown’s early explosiveness allowed the Jayhawks to take the contest at 87-56 Feb. 10.

Genesee out-scored the Jayhawks in the final quarter making the contest a 54-48 game for the final three quarters. Three Cougars hit double-digits that included Rosalyn Sealey, Kierra Perl and Reika Murota.

Sealey led the team with 16 points and also had a team-high in assists with four. Perl added 14 points to go with seven boards, while Murota got 12 of her 14 points from threes with three boards and three assists.

TaLia Burgess was the team leader in rebounds with 10 and also added seven points. Rachel Meyer rounded out the scoring with a half-dozen points and three assists.

Jamestown was hot out of the gate and their 25-point lead after the first quarter carried them the rest of the contest.

P.W. Minor the historic shoe manufacturer in Batavia, is being taken over by a Delaware investment company.
The 150 year old shoemaking business was sold to Tidewater Associates, of Newark, Delaware.
Batavia businessman Peter Zeliff was credited with saving P.W. Minor around four years ago when he took over the fledgling business on the brink of closure.
Zeliff was integral in returning jobs to Batavia that had been outsourced to China, and Under Zeliff’s leadership P.W. Minor was able to expand the brand to offer a variety of high quality footwear.
Zeliff will have a seat on the board of Tidewater but will give up his role as CEO.
The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce named P. W. Minor the Business of the Year for 2015.

Alleged assault in Byron lands a Perry man in lock up.
36 year old Nicholas Stefaniak of Westview Drive in Perry was arrested after allegedly assaulting another individual causing serious physical injury and damaging their property during an incident last Thursday night.
The disturbance was reported at a Byron Holley Road residence in Byron.
After being arraigned in Stafford Town Court Stefaniak was remanded in lieu $5,000 bail to the Genesee County Jail.

Buffalo man behind bars following a one car crash in Wyoming County.
42 year old Isaac Caver, Jr. of Buffalo was arrested following a single motor vehicle accident on State Route 20A in Orangeville Friday.
Wyoming County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the scene where they allegedly found Caver to be intoxicated and driving on 18 active suspensions.
Caver was charged with Felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, DWI, along with traffic infractions.
He was ordered to be held in the Wyoming County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail and is due back in court on February 28th.

19 scantily clad snowmobilers braved the cold and snow to raise money for breast cancer patients.

A Delaware based investment company, Tidewater + Associates,  has announced is has acquired Batavia based shoe manufacturer P.W. Minor.

According  to a statement issued by Tidewater on February 1 and made available locally today, the Newark, Delaware based firm wrote in a news release:

Tidewater + Associates has completed its investment in shoe manufacturer P.W. Minor. The current CEO, Peter Zeliff, will transition from CEO to board member. Hundley Elliotte, a member of Tidewater’s leadership team, will step in as managing CEO.

Founded in 1867, P.W. Minor is the country’s second oldest shoe manufacturer. It currently operates three key brands: P.W. Minor, Abram Boot Company and the Batavia Boot & Shoe Company. Malkischer Commits to GCC Lacrosse

Genesee Community College women’s lacrosse coach Jeff Reyngoudt will let no geographic boundary come between himself and improvement of his program. Reyngoudt traveled nearly the length of the state to add Juila Malkischer to his future roster.

The attacker currently competes for Arlington High School in LaGrangeville in Section I of the New York Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) in girls lacrosse that features some of the largest demographic teams from Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties.

While the Arlington varsity girls lacrosse program has only been in existence for a little over a decade, it has recently come to prominence having recorded nearly 40 wins over the past four seasons that includes one Conference I-A title, as well as one Conference I-B title.

In addition, 30-plus alumni have moved on to the college ranks in lacrosse with Malkischer becoming the most recent by signing her letter of intent to attend GCC this week.

The Arlington Girls Lacrosse Program started as an after school intramural club in 2006 and went varsity in the spring of 2007. In 2008 the varsity secured their first winning record and their first trip to sectionals. The team won their first league championship in 2014.

The program has made multiple trips to the sectional quarterfinals since 2012 including 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. In 2015 the varsity won their second consecutive league championship.

In 2014, the Arlington girls lacrosse program won the Section I and NYSPHSAA Community Challenge Award for their commitment to Angelo Mastandrea and the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.

Sheriff William A. Sheron, Jr. is pleased to announce the First Annual Genesee County Sheriff’s Office Teen Academy

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office will be offering its first annual Teen Academy July 23 – July 27, 2018, at the Byron-Bergen Central School.

“The Teen Academy is a one-week structured program which consists of instructional classes designed to provide high-school-aged students within our community an introduction to law enforcement training and gain an understanding of law enforcement’s role in their community. It is our hope that teens will build confidence while learning good decision-making and leadership skills,” stated Sheriff Sheron.

Academy instructors are experienced Deputy Sheriffs who will discuss day-to-day operations of the Sheriff’s Office. Participants will also:

• visit the Jail, 911 Emergency Communications Dispatch Center, and Sheriff’s Office
• observe displays of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), Hostage Negotiation, SCUBA Team, K-9 Unit and Evidence Recovery
• be provided insight into motor vehicle accident reconstruction
• participate in daily physical fitness runs, defensive tactics and team-building exercises
• participate in a classroom setting and learn about the NYS Penal Laws and Vehicle & Traffic Laws
• participate in mock traffic stops and DWI procedures

Qualified candidates will be selected for an interview screening process if they meet the following requirements:

 must be entering grades 10-12
 must be in good academic standing with little to no disciplinary issues
 must be able to participate in physical fitness activities
 must have a positive attitude
 must have their parent’s permission

“This is a unique and forward-thinking opportunity offered by Genesee County Sheriff Sheron and Department. Teens are invited to immerse and be exposed to the real law enforcement experience. More than imagining, the academy opportunity is live, in-the-minute learning about today’s community policing needs of an exciting career in law enforcement. Students are encouraged to ‘try on’ a law enforcement career role,” stated Chair of the Public Service Committee.

Illegal alien with felony conviction picked up in Clarence.
35 year old Cesar Cruz-Perez of Mexico was convicted of being a removed alien found in the United States subsequent to a conviction for an aggravated felony.
Cruz-Perez was located in Clarence in August of last year after being previously removed to Mexico on two separate occasions in 2007.
He admitted to law enforcement that he was illegally in the US and a subsequent record check determined that in 2004, he was convicted in New Jersey of possessing a Controlled Dangerous Substance on school property, a felony offense.
Cruz-Perez was sentenced to 21 months in prison.

Rochester doctor sentenced for distributing drugs.
68 year old Dr. Clifford Jacobson of Rochester faced sentencing yesterday after being convicted of illegally distributing a controlled substance.
As a practicing psychiatrist he sold prescriptions for controlled substances, to undercover agents and patients who had no medical need for the drug charging his patients $120 for each for the illegal prescription.
Jacobson was sentenced to one year probation to include four months of home confinement and he is required to surrender his license to practice medicine and pay to $75,000 in fines.

Timing is everything, and now is the time to leave as executive director of YWCA of Genesee County after six and a half years, Jeanne Walton says.
“I have been fortunate to work with a lot of people and take the organization to a new level,” Walton said. “And we’re at a point where a lot of things need to be addressed and we need a person with a different skill set to work on them.”

When Walton took the position in July 2011, her goals were to work with staff to increase exposure and awareness of YWCA, its offerings and mission to empower women and families and eliminate racism. That tall order was achieved with the addition of the Care+Crisis Helpline in 2015, a total renovation of the My Sister’s Closet thrift shop, expanding the agency’s awards event into a nationally aligned Women of Distinction function and increased devotion to serving the needs of domestic violence victims and child care families.

“Being here has taught me a lot about the need for these services in the community. I was not aware, especially, for the need of crisis services,” Walton said. “We’ve worked hard to change things in the domestic violence department to provide services we hope will urge clients to make significant transformations in their lives. For the past four years we’ve really brought some significant change to the lives of people, especially those who have gone into our Safe House; some have completely turned their lives around. And the Care+Crisis Helpline has filled a huge void.”

Although some ventures have come and gone, such as the Artisans at North Street and a teen youth program, they have all been important “to the process and to our learning development,” Walton said. She is proud of the agency’s more recent and ongoing programs and events, which have also included the Stiletto & Sneaker 5K, a Healthy Relationships course taught in local schools, peace and justice vigils, support groups and the You Engaging Success transition program for domestic violence victims. They all prove that the agency’s vision can be interpreted in a variety of ways, she said.
“I’m appreciative of the continuous support the community has offered to me, but more importantly, to YWCA as a whole in supporting new ventures we’ve undertaken,” she said.

Millie Tomidy-Pepper has begun her new role as executive director and looks forward to working on agency initiatives to eliminate racism and empower women. As a former executive director of the Mental Health Association in Genesee County, Tomidy-Pepper brings several years of experience and a background in nonprofit management, including the oversight of fiscal stability and growth, employee and facility management, advocating for clients at a national, state and local level and strategic planning to reach fiscal stability, quality service and enhanced community awareness.

Wayne Fuller, former WBTA on-air personality and voice of the Muckdogs, has died.

Following a number of recent health problems Wayne passed away this morning  at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was 70 years old.

In addition to his decades of announcing on WBTA, Wayne was the Dwyer Stadium voice of the NYP League Batavia Muckdogs and long time announcer for Batavia High School basketball.

“Wayne was a unique on-air personality. He had a perfect voice for AM radio, clear and distinctive. That voice served him well for his public address work as the stadium announcer for the Muckdogs and in the gymnasium for BHS basketball.

Wayne could weave a story in such great detail. He knew what the weather was on the day his story was set, he could tell you what song was popular on that day. He had a passion for trains and memorized schedules and could describe railroad stations along most any route.

He was a great friend and a wonderful and talented employee who will be missed by his colleagues and fans alike.”

Newly elected Genesee County Legislators Gordon Dibble (District 3, Towns of Pembroke & Darien), John Hilchey (District 1, Towns of Alabama & Oakfield), and Gary T. Maha (District 9, Wards 4 & 5, City of Batavia) attended an Orientation Program for Newly Elected and Appointed County Officials sponsored by the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) at their annual Legislative Conference held in Albany, New York January 29-31, 2018.

Topics of discussion and presentations included an overview of the New York State Association of Counties; New York State Open Government Laws; Major Policy Issues Affecting Counties; Introduction to County Finance and Budget Issues; County Government Structure in New York State; Ethics in Government; Adopting Local Laws; and Role of the Clerks of Legislative Boards.

Approximately 70 newly elected and appointed county officials attended the training program, and upon completion were awarded Certificates of Achievement by NYSAC’s County Government Institute and Cornell University.

Wayne Fuller a former announcer on WBTA has passed.

Wayne passed away this morning while at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a number of recent health problems.

He worked on and off at WBTA beginning in 1967 and was a permanent fixture on WBTA for the past two decades.

The people’s choice awards are in for Downtown Revitalization.
Members of the community had an opportunity to weigh in and show support from a number of proposed projects looking to revitalize downtown Batavia.
Around 60 people showed for Batavia’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative meeting last night with attendees helping whittle down the most popular proposals.
By using colored stickers attendees voted for projects they supported.
It was the second public open house for the DRI and the last time for public input.

Flynn said the $15 million worth of projects submitted by the Local Planning Committee will be cut down to $10 million during the final approval process by the State.
The most popular projects from last night included a remodeling of the former Carrs building, construction of a permanent downtown public market, a healthy living campus with a new YMCA, a new home for the Batavia Players in the mall and a remodel of the Batavia Showtime Theater.
According to Flynn the earliest groundbreaking on any approved project would not be until the spring of 2019.

Kicking off the weekend with a Winter Weather Advisory.
Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties are all included in the advisory issued by The National Weather Service.
The weather advisory is going into effect at 10 o’clock this morning and will remain in effect until Saturday at 6 AM.
Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected.
Plan on slippery road conditions and limited visibilities, especially for the evening commute today.

Drug Task Force takes a Walnut Street woman in for drugs.
Following investigation by the Genesee County Local Drug Task Force they arrested 27 year old Jaylinn Oneil of Walnut Street in Batavia.
She was allegedly found with a quantity of cocaine, drug packaging materials and hypodermic needles.
Oneil was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of a Hypodermic Instrument and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
She was released under supervision of Genesee Justice.

New York’s flu season is getting worse.
The newest numbers show confirmed flu cases are up 35-percent statewide from the week before.
Western New York still has some of the highest flu rates in the state.
Governor Cuomo is trying to get emergency funding to make flu shots more accessible and slow the virus.

Western New York counties are getting some much needed funding to upgrade their 9-1-1 systems.
This week, Governor Cuomo announced a more than 50-million-dollar statewide initiative for next level emergency communications.
All Western New York counties will get at least 350-thousand-dollars.
Cuomo said this will help first responders have the best equipment to get them where they’re needed faster.

A Pembroke crash ends with arrest of a Batavia man.
Deputies say 48 year old Paul Fields Jr. of Pearl Street Road was driving at an unreasonable speed on Indian Falls and crashed when he attempted to change lanes.
Fields was charged with DWI and criminal possession of drugs.

Genesee County just reported another 100 confirmed cases of the flu bring the total local cases to 250 since the flu season started September 1st,
There were only 53 total cases reported during last years flu season in Genesee count.

Lady Cougars Lose Heartbreaker to Saints

The Genesee Community College women’s basketball team rallied from an 11-0 deficit and maintained control of almost the entire game before a pair of free throws by visiting Mercyhurst North East in the game’s dying seconds snatched victory away from the Cougars, 62-61 in Western New York Athletic Conference action Feb. 7.

After trailing 11-0, the Cougars finished the first quarter with a 12-3 run to pull within two at 14-12.

Rosalyn Sealey scored Genesee’s next 10 points to open the second quarter and in the process put the Cougars in front 22-17. Genesee would extend that lead to nine points at 30-21, before the Saints closed the gap at 33-29 at the intermission.

With the exception of a very brief 39-37 lead by Mercyhurst, the Cougars held the edge the rest of the way with a lead as high as eight points midway through the final quarter.

It wasn’t until the game’s final minute that the Saints managed to get the lead at 60-59, but a Sealey jumper put Genesee back on top 61-60 with 45 seconds left. Ultimately a pair of late fouls led to the Cougar’s demise with the game-winning free throw scored with less than a second remaining on the clock.

Sealey finished the game with more than 50 percent of the team’s points with 31. Kierra Perl hit double-digits with a dozen points, while TaLia Burgess added nine. The latter pair co-led the Cougars with nine boards each.

Rachel Meyer wasn’t far behind with eight rebounds, while adding three blocks and a team-high five assists.

Fobbs Sets Single-Game Scoring Record in MNE Victory

Genesee Community College’s Brian Fobbs set a school record for points in a game with 46 in leading the Cougars to a 90-82 win over visiting Mercyhurst North East in a Western New York Athletic Conference matchup Feb. 7.

In addition to accounting for more than 50 percent of the Cougars’ total points on the night, Fobbs also added 21 rebounds, five assists, and three steals while going a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. Fobbs ended the day with a 76 percent shooting percentage from the field by sinking 16-of-21.

Mercyhurst came out of the gate and built a seven-point lead at 9-2 before a pair of Fobbs free throws gave the Cougars their first lead of the game at 20-18 midway through the first half.

The Saints responded by building an even bigger lead – at eight points – at 30-22, but Fobbs restored the Cougar lead with just five minutes left in the first at 35-34. The go-ahead basket began a string of seven-consecutive points for the sophomore that put Genesee in front 40-34.

After being down by eight at 30-22, the Cougars finished the half on a 25-8 run for a 47-38 halftime lead that they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way.

The Saints attempted to go-ahead several times and tied the game on four separate occasions in the second half, but were ultimately never able to pull in front. Mercyhurst tied the game at 56, 60, 67 and 69, with the latter being the last time with just under seven minutes to go.

Two other Cougars recorded double-digit point performances with Rahmel Thompson scoring 23 and Tyrese Cherry adding 10. Cherry finished behind Fobbs in rebounds with eight and had a pair of blocks, while Brandon Peters had a team-high seven assists.

Fobbs now needs 28 points to move into eighth place on the Cougars all-time scoring list. Currently, Brian Jackson is at No. 8 with 1,135 career points and Fobbs now has 1,108. The previous single game points record that Fobbs surpassed in the win belonged to Avery Oliver at 42 during the 2003-04 season.

According to Interim City Manager and Director of Public Works in Batavia Matt Worth, overdue repairs to the City Centre in Downtown Batavia are right around the corner.

Worth appeared on WBTA’s Main and Center program this morning where he spoke about the repair process moving forward.

Worth also touched on the proposed projects being presented to the city’s planning committee in response to the 10 million dollar Downtown Revitalization Initiative funds awarded to Batavia by the State last year.

The Arc of Genesee Orleans is planning an Art Show and Film Festival in celebration of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in March. The free event will be held Saturday, March 17 at the Stuart Steiner Theatre on the Batavia campus of Genesee Community College.

There will be a collection of art work created by individuals served at the Arc of Genesee Orleans on display in the foyer at Stuart Steiner Theatre and an opportunity to meet and talk with the some of the artists beginning at 12:30 p.m. The film festival gets underway at 1:00 p.m. All of the films are from the New York City based Sprout Touring Film Festival and feature works written by or starring individuals with intellectual or other developmental disabilities.

Everyone who attends will have the opportunity to enter to win a beautiful framed work of art courtesy of an artist served by the Arc of Genesee Orleans.

Genesee County flu cases still cropping up this season.
According to the county health department another 100 confirmed flu cases have been reported in Genesee County.
Since the beginning of the flu season on September 1st the County has recorded 250 flu cases.
That is nearly five times as many as the 53 confirmed flu cases recorded locally just last year.
The county health department is continuing to encourage people to get a flu shot if you have not done so, since some protection is better than none at all.

Crash in Pembroke leads to charges for a Batavia man.
Following investigation into a single motor vehicle accident on Indian Falls Road in Pembroke late last night deputies arrested 48 year old Paul Fields Jr. of Pearl Street Road in Batavia.
He was allegedly driving too fast for the poor road conditions and moved from a lane unsafely before crashing.
Deputies allegedly found Fields under the influence and in possession of a controlled substance.
He was charged with DWI, criminal drug possession and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation along with traffic infractions.
Fields was released with an appearance ticket for March 27th in Pembroke Town Court.

Alleged armed robbery in Avon lands a Rochester man behind bars without bail.
The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office released pictures of the alleged suspect and his vehicle, seeking public assistance in his apprehension.
Yesterday Livingston County Deputies tracked down 30 year old John Washburn of Rochester and took him into custody for allegedly robbing the Dutch Hollow Market in East Avon last Saturday.
The clerk told deputies that the suspect walked in and demanded money from the cash register and then threatened to shoot him if he called the cops.
Washburn was arrested  and jailed without bail due to prior felony convictions in the state of Arizona.

GCC Goes for the Gold with Club Fair Speaker.
Cathy Turner a two time Olympic Gold Medalist in short track speed skating will be speaking at the GCC Club fair next Tuesday.
Turner is a native of Hilton and won gold in the 1992 and 1994 Olympics.
Turner will be sharing her motivational story encouraging students to go for the gold.
She will also be on hand to sign autographs and meet and greet students.

A defense attorney is attacking the credibility of a star prosecution witness in the trial of Joe Percoco, a former top aide to Governor Cuomo.
Percoco’s lawyer targeted former lobbyist Todd Howe’s history of lying and said he couldn’t be trusted to tell the truth about alleged bribery schemes.
Prosecutors say Howe conspired with Percoco to solicit bribes from wealthy developers doing business with New York state.
On the stand yesterday, Howe said he altered emails to make it seem like Percoco was having more conversations with the governor than he actually was.

Another 100 cases of the flu have been reported in Genesee County.
The flu season started September 1st. The latest cases brings the season total to 250.
The county health department says last year, total flu cases locally numbered only 53.
The department continues to urge those who have not received a flu shot to get one, since some protection is better than none at all.

A Rochester man arrested for a robbery in Avon and threatening to shoot the store clerk if he called police.
Livingston County Deputies have collared 30 year old John Washburn of Rochester for allegedly robbing the Dutch Hollow Market in east Avon last Saturday.

An Akron man is behind bars for allegedly slugging a guy with a baseball bat in Batavia.
Police say 31 year old Ismael Laffosse of Fisk Road in Akron struck used a bat to beat a man during a fracas late last month on Apollo Drive.
Laffosse was also charged with damaging his victim’s property.

Ticket prices are going up for Buffalo Bills season ticket holders.
The Bills say they increased season ticket prices by an average of three-percent.
The Bills claim their season tickets are still some of the best-priced in the NFL.

AVON: Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of a Rochester man after the investigation of a Robbery at the Dutch Hollow Market in East Avon.

On Saturday February 3, 2018 at approximately 5:35 pm, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Dutch Hollow Market for a Robbery that had just occurred. The store employee reported that a white male with facial hair and wearing a hooded sweatshirt came into the store and approached the register. The clerk further reported that the suspect told the employee that he was being robbed and demanded money from the cash register and told the employee that he would shoot him if he called the police.

Members form the Sheriff’s Office Command Staff, Criminal Investigations Division, Road Patrol Division, and Forensic Identification Unit conducted the investigation at the scene which included the recovery of video surveillance of the suspect and vehicle used in the crime.

Members of the Criminal Investigations Division conducted the follow up investigation and on February 6th the images of the robbery were released to the public to assist with identifying the suspect and vehicle. After numerous leads were followed up, the suspect was identified as 30 year old John W. Washburn III of Rochester.

On February 7th, Sheriff’s Investigators took Washburn into custody on Lexington Ave in Rochester. Washburn was arrested and charged with Robbery in the First Degree, a class B felony.

Wasburn was turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for processing and pre-arraignment detention. The District Attorney’s Office was contacted in regards to bail on the matter and advised Washburn will be held without the chance of bail due to having prior felony convictions in the state of Arizona.

“The New Tax Laws – How It Affects You and Your Business” will be the subject of a small business workshop to be hosted the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce on February 14.

This is the one of a series of business workshops held in conjunction with the United States Small Business Administration and the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce. The workshops are open to all Chamber and non-Chamber businesses and their employees and will offer expert advice from experienced business professionals designed to help small businesses succeed and grow.

“2018 ushers in the most sweeping changes in our tax laws in recent history,” said Tom Turnbull, Chamber President. “What will that mean for you and your business? Genesee Community College’s history club is excited to announce the addition of Jeff Donohue’s discussion on “Ely Parker: A Man of Two Worlds” to its Historical Horizon’s Lecture Series.

Independent historian and former director of the Holland Land Office and Museum, Jeff Donahue will be at GCC’s Batavia Campus on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 7 p.m. in room T102 if the Conable Technology Building.

Donohue’s talk will examine the challenges Parker faced living in two worlds. During the Civil War, Ely Samuel Parker, a Seneca chief, struggled against prevailing prejudices to make his mark. He was so successful that he would become the man entrusted to copy the terms of surrender at Appomattox Court House.

Services Offered to Landlords by the City of Batavia Police Department

As part of our continued community partnership, the Batavia Police Department offers the following services to landlords in an effort to help them choose the best possible tenants and evaluate police responses to their properties. These services were developed in direct response to feedback the department received from landlords and directly address the concerns they had. Below are the listed services and information on both programs.

Property Owner FOIL (Freedom Of Information Law) Request – This service will tell landlords how many times the Batavia Police Department has responded to a property within the time frame requested. After the initial request, we will provide a monthly contact summary every month on the second Tuesday of the month. Landlords can have the information emailed to them at no cost. For a hard copy, a charge of $.25 per page will be assessed. Copies of actual reports will not be provided.

Tenant Background Check – This service will show landlords the times a potential tenant has been arrested. This information will only show arrests and not how many times the potential tenant has had police contact. The information provided will include arrests from the Batavia Police Department ONLY and will cover the previous 5 years. The potential tenant will have to submit the background check form, in person, as we must verify their identity. Cost for this service is $10 which will need to be collected from the potential tenant at the time the form is turned in. The background form cannot be turned in by the landlord.

Copies of the above request forms can be found under the “Police Department” section on the City of Batavia’s website located at http://www.batavianewyork.com/Files. Forms can also be provided via email, US Mail or by stopping at Batavia Police Headquarters located at 10 W. Main St., Batavia, NY 14020. Results can be sent via email, US Mail or in person.

Proposal for new Batavia Town Fire Substation on Stringham Drive has little objection.
Plans for the construction of a new $3.2 million 10,000 square foot substation were outlined by Town of Batavia Fire Department officials.
The planned substation on Stringham Drive is complete with a dormitory wing for “resident” firefighters.
Gary Diegelman Chair of the department’s building committee, said the dorm would be available for honorable members ready to respond…

Around 30 people attended the public informational meeting at the Batavia Town Hall last night with many of the attendees residing near the proposed location of the new fire hall on Stringham Drive.  No one objected to the plans, however some residents were concerned about excess runoff leading to more standing water and the loss of green-space with fire hall backing up to their homes.  For more on the story check the article by our news partner The Batavian.

Genesee County is now under a Winter Weather Advisory.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory which is in effect until early tomorrow morning with total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches expected.
They released a special weather statement saying a large area of snow will move north into the area this morning, for the morning commute.
Snowfall rates will approach an inch per hour after 8 am, so expect scattered slick spots and reduced visibilities.
Allow extra time to reach your destination this morning.

An Akron man jailed for assault with a baseball bat in Batavia.
31 year old Ismael Laffosse of Fisk Road in Akron was arrested and charged with Attempted Assault, Menacing, Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Criminal Mischief following an alleged incident at an Apollo Drive address in Batavia.
Laffosse was accused of striking another individual with a baseball bat and then damaging their property during an incident last month.
He was remanded without bail to the Genesee County Jail.

Medina man jailed without bail for alleged illegal gun sale.
50 year old Dino Callara of Slade Road in Medina was arrested following an investigation alleging that he possessed and sold a gun in November of last year.
Callara is barred from possessing firearms due to being a two time convicted felon and was charged with Criminal Sale of a Firearm.
He was additionally charged with Grand Larceny for a separate incident in October where Callara allegedly sold a vehicle as scrap that he was hired to install a transmission on without the owner’s consent.
He was jailed without bail and is expected back in Shelby Town Court on Thursday.

Ticket prices are going up for Buffalo Bills season ticket holders.
The Bills this week said they’re increasing season ticket prices by an average of three-percent.
The Bills’ president apologized, saying he doesn’t take this lightly but their season tickets are still some of the best-priced in the NFL.

A research team at the University of Rochester Medical Center is working to create the perfect flu shot.
Researchers are trying to collect information on variations of the virus to focus on what doesn’t mutate as much instead of trying to predict future mutations.
The goal is to make a universal flu shot that protects against all strains for five years.
This spring, URMC is paying around one to four-thousand-dollars to participants in an intensive bird flu vaccine study.

The National Weather Service has now issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Genesee County.
The advisory takes effect early tomorrow morning until early Thursday morning.
The advisory warns of heavy snow and difficult travel conditions especially during the morning commute.
Total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected.

A state senator is calling for a law that will force companies to better package laundry detergent pods after a trend of young people eating the toxic item. It’s expected to be talked about by lawmakers today in Albany. Senator Brad Hoylman says it’s outrageous that Proctor and Gamble still hasn’t made Tide pods safer. Hoylman points out on Twitter that there’ve been thousands of incidents with children nationally and a growing trend called the Tide pod challenge where teens intentionally put them in their mouths sometimes leading to hospitalization.

A Medina man jailed without bail for an alleged illegal gun sale.
50 year old Dino Callara of Slade Road in Medina was arrested following an investigation that he illegally possessed and sold a gun in last November. Callara is barred from possessing firearms because he is a two time felony offender.

A Darien man accused of dozing off on drugs while driving in Elba.
Deputies received a report of an illegally parked vehicle on Batavia Elba Townline Road. The driver was apparently passed out behind the wheel.
He was identified as 19 year old Nicholas Schafer of Broadway Road in Darien.
He was arrested and charged with driving while impaired by drugs.

A SUNY Geneseo employee and his daughter are record winners on an TV game show.
Last night on “The Wall,” Kirk and Brooke Spangler won more than one-point-four-million-dollars. Kirk is an associate director at SUNY Geneseo, but the two are originally from Allegheny County.

AVON-LIMA-LIVONIA: Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports that the Sheriff’s Office has received over 20 complaints from Livonia, Avon, and Lima residents reporting that their credit cards have been fraudulently used at various Walmart stores throughout New York State since December 14, 2017.

The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is currently conducting the investigation into where the credit cards were compromised and the suspects responsible for using the credit card information.

It is believed that most, if not all, of the cards were compromised at a gas pump where a skimming device captured the user’s credit card information. Sheriff’s Investigators are attempting to find a common source for the victims of the theft and are working with area gas stations to ensure their gas pumps have not been compromised.

Sheriff Dougherty urges residents to check their credit card activity for any suspicious activity and to alert their bank and contact the Sheriff’s Office at 243-7100 if any unauthorized activity has occurred.

Some tips on how to avoid falling victim if credit card skimming:

– Paying in cash is the most effective defense against skimmers.
– Use a credit card, not a debit card, since credit cards have better fraud protection, and the money is not deducted immediately from an account.
– If using a debit card at a pump, choose to run it as a credit card rather than punch in a PIN number.
– Check to make sure the gas pump dispenser cabinet is closed and shows no signs of tampering.
– Choose the pump closest to the station’s clerk. Thieves often place skimmers at pumps farther away from the store.

Cougar Athletes of the Week Announced

The Genesee Community College’s athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 3 are Nanako Shizawa (Chiba, Japan) from the women’s swimming team and Joan Ferrer (Vinaros, Spain) from the men’s swimming team.

Nanako was part of eight wins in two events for the Genesee Community College women’s swim team last week. Individually, she won five events and was a part of another three team wins. At Jamestown CC, Nanako captured the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle in solo competition, and helped the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams to victory. Against Herkimer just three days later Feb. 3, Nanako won three individual events in varying events and distances that ranged from 100 yards (butterfly), 200 yards (individual medley) and 500 yards (freestyle). After a trio of individual wins, she then helped the 200-yard medley relay team to victory as well.

Joan was the most productive men’s swimmer for Genesee last week when he either won or was a part of three winning events to propel the Cougars over Jamestown Jan. 31 in their final scoring meet of the season before region championships. Individually, Joan captured the 100-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle races before joining three teammates in taking the 200-yard medley relay race. In the team’s last non-scoring meet, Joan was even better against visiting Herkimer Feb. 3 with a pair of individual wins at 100 yards (butterfly and freestyle) and a pair of relay wins at 200- (medley) and 400-yards (freestyle).

EAST AVON: The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance in attempting to identify a Robbery suspect.

On Saturday February 3rd, 2018 at approximately 5:35pm the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Dutch Hollow Market on East Avon Lima Road (Rt. 5&20) in the Town of Avon for a Robbery that had just occurred.

The suspect pulled into the parking lot in a silver or gray 4 door sedan, believed to be a KIA Optima. The suspect then entered the store and threatened the clerk with the use of a firearm and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

50 year old Dino Callara of Slade Road in Medina was arrested following an investigation alleging that he possessed and sold a gun in November of last year.

Callara is barred from possessing firearms due to being a two time convicted felon and was charged with Criminal Sale of a Firearm.

He was additionally charged with Grand Larceny for a separate incident in October where Callara allegedly sold a vehicle as scrap that he was hired to install a transmission on without the owner’s consent.

He was jailed without bail and is expected back in Shelby Town Court on Thursday.

Troopers on the State Thruway in LeRoy stopped a car for speeding on Sunday.

The driver was identified as 23 year old Albert Santos of Louisville Kentucky.

Not only did Troopers discover Santos was driving on an invalid license but a search of the vehicle revealed he was in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun and a quantity of marijuana.

Further investigation determined the gun was stolen and Santos was wanted in Indiana.

He was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Stolen Property along with pot possession and traffic infractions.

Santos was committed in lieu of $50,000 bail to the Genesee County Jail.

Wyoming County woman pleads not guilty to sexually abusing a young child.
23 year old Victoria Young is accused of sending a video to someone showing a sexual act by a four year old child she’s related to.
She was arrested by Attica police last month and yesterday she pleaded not guilty to the charges in court.
Young has been barred contact with the child and is being held on $100,000 bail.

Another round of winter weather is ready to rock the region.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of Western New York including Livingston and Wyoming Counties
The Watch is going into effect tomorrow across the region with forecasters predicting a possible foot of snow and ice.
Peak snowfalls could make the afternoon drive particularly difficult with snow fall expected to drop at the rate of up to an inch an hour.

Darien man accused of dozing off on drugs while driving in Elba.
Dispatchers received a report of vehicle illegally parked on Batavia Elba Townline Road in Elba in which the driver was apparently passed out behind the wheel.
Deputies located the vehicle and identified the driver as 19 year old Nicholas Schafer of Broadway Road in Darien.
He was arrested and charged with DWI, DWAI by a combination of Drugs, Operating a Motor Vehicle Impaired by Drugs and a Parking violation.
Schafer was issued an appearance ticket for Elba Town Court on March 21st.

Damaging domestic incident in LeRoy lands a Greece man in lock up.
Deputies were called to respond to a reported domestic disturbance at a Main Road address in LeRoy were they arrested 23 year old Armando Carrion-Rojas of Greece.
During the domestic incident Carrion –Rojas was reportedly locked out of his girlfriend’s home, that’s when he allegedly broke the driver’s side mirror off her vehicle and damaged the door frame to the residence after discovering it was locked.
He was charged with Criminal Mischief and committed to the Genesee County Jail in Lieu of $500 bail.
He is expected back in LeRoy Town Court on March 13th.

Governor Cuomo is calling for the state Senate to pass the Dream Act.
Yesterday the Assembly overwhelmingly passed legislation trying to give the children of undocumented immigrant’s financial aid for college.
Cuomo says it’s important that New York protects immigrants when Washington isn’t.

A SUNY Geneseo employee and his daughter are record winners on an NBC game show.
Last night on “The Wall,” Kirk and Brooke Spangler won more than $1.4 million.
Kirk is an associate director at SUNY Geneseo, but the two are originally from Allegheny County.

The Eli Fish Brewing Company hopes to tap its first keg on March 1st.
Co-owner Matt Gray said today construction inside the old Newberry Building on Main Street is now complete.
He says he’s just waiting for furniture and kitchenware.
The completely renovated site features a tavern on the first floor with the basement brewery visible from the bar area.
Two two restaurant incubators and a common seating area to service all three operations. The restaurants have yet to be named. They were determined in what was known as a Fresh Lab competition. They are expected to be open by April 1st.
The building also has four apartments on the second floor.
There is space for three more apartments on the third floor.

A Winter Storm Watch has been posted for Wyoming and Livingston counties for later this week.
The National Weather Service is forecasting moderately heavy snow from Wednesday morning through late Wednesday night.
So far, the Watch does not include Gensee County.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is urging the IRS to honor prepayments of 2018 property taxes.

The so-called Trump Tax Plan caps state and local deductions $10,000.
Homeowners in New York’s pricier communities flooded their towns’ tax offices last December to prepay property and school taxes before the end of the year.
The IRS has said those taxes are deductible only if you were billed beforehand.

Reserve Airman 1st Class Margo N. Westcott

U.S. Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Margo N. Westcott graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Westcott earned distinction as an honor graduate.

She is the daughter of Tracey and Mark Westcott of Brockport, N.Y. Westcott is also the sister of Candice Westcott and Brittney Westcott.

The airman is a 2007 graduate of Brockport High School, Brockport, N.Y.

28 year old Jacqueline Kobee of Buffalo was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, possessing a Controlled Substance in a non- original container, Unlawful Pot Possession and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

State Troopers stopped Kobee Saturday afternoon on Route 77 in Pavilion.

She was ordered to be held in lieu of bail.

68 year old Michael Morasco of Batavia was stopped by State Police on Route 63 in Pavilion for allegedly moving from a lane unsafely.

Morasco was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs along with a traffic infraction.

He was issued an appearance ticket.

Rochester resident jailed without bail for alleged drug sales in the city.
Following investigation into a disturbance in Batavia, police arrested 27 year old Torrence Greene of Rochester.
Police were called to a disturbance on Walnut Street last Friday where they allegedly found Greene in possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell it.
He was hit with two felony counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and was remanded without bail to the Genesee County Jail.

Accident in Alexander leads to felony DWI for a LeRoy woman.
36 year old Michelle Condidorio of South Street in LeRoy was arrested early Saturday morning following an accident on Telephone Road in Alexander.
Deputies charged her with felony DWI due to a previous drunk driving conviction within the past 10 years.

Pratt Road man accused of threatening a member of Law Enforcement.
62 year old Joseph Misiak of Prat Road in Batavia was arrested and charged with Aggravated Harassment following an incident last month.
Misiak is accused of calling a member of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office with the intent to threaten and alarm them.
He allegedly left a voicemail threatening violence against the individual.
Misiak was issued an appearance ticket for city court on February 22nd.

46 year old Darcia Golda of West Main Street in Batavia is accused of stealing more than $31,000 from the Rite Aid Pharmacy on West Main Street Road.
She reportedly stole the funds while working at the drug store between October of 2016 and September of last year.
She was arrested and charged with a felony count of grand larceny.

Governor Cuomo says he’s preventing state entities from doing business with companies that tolerate discrimination.
Yesterday he signed an executive order that bans state agencies and authorities from doing business that tolerate or promote discrimination.
Cuomo said this includes sex, gender identity and national origin.
The governor also wants to prevent the use of something called the gay panic defense in court for those who attack someone after learning of the victim’s gender or sexual orientation.

Cuomo said the Trump administration showed what he called “disrespect” toward the people of Puerto Rico for not helping out more after Hurricane Maria.

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) has once again called for the removal of the infamous blue and white ‘I Love NY Signs’ that have been erected along the New York State Thruway and highways all over the state at a cost of $8.1 million to taxpayers.

“We know the governor’s hubris has gotten our state into trouble, but now it has cost taxpayers another $14 million in federal fines – totaling $22 million,” Hawley said. “It is unconscionable to think Gov. Cuomo knew the signs were illegal since the Obama administration, then used $8.1 million in taxpayer money and an out of state company to design and build them anyway. Furthermore, after many were destroyed by harsh winds in Western New York last year, he used more public money to rebuild and replace them.

“Many of the signs were built downstate by an Arkansas-based company with many manufactured out of state. The Cuomo administration has ignored federal warnings for years that the signs were illegal and must be taken down.

“I am calling for Gov. Cuomo to immediately take down all ‘I Love NY Signs’ and adhere to federal law before more of New York’s money is washed down the drain.”
