News Release
On Saturday, December 8th, members of the Batavia Police Department, Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, and New York State Police will be volunteering their personal time to participate in the fourth annual “Shop with a Cop” event at Wal-mart on Veterans Memorial Drive.
Each department received grant money to fund the event. All three agencies received donations from The City of Batavia PBA, Genesee County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, New York State Troopers PBA, CSEA, the City’s “Jeans for Friday”, Bonarigo and McCutcheon Law Office, Bohm-Calarco Smith Funeral Home, Town of Batavia Fire Dept, and Statewide Machinery/House O’ Laundry. These donations allowed 25 extra children to be invited.
The schools within Genesee County all assisted in choosing the children. A total of 53 children were invited to participate in this year’s event. Once at Wal-mart the children will take photographs with Santa Claus and meet with their individual Police Officer/Deputy/Trooper. The children are allotted to spend $100 on presents for themselves or family members. Wal-mart graciously hosts the event. Wal-mart provides specific employees designated to this event, Santa Claus, pictures with Santa, gift bags, wrapping paper, and funding.
In addition to the students that the Genesee County school districts have chosen; the Batavia Police Benevolent Association specifically chose to donate to children of a local family who are dealing with a major medical concern.
