BND Hockey Wins the McCarthy Memorial Tournament

Over the weekend, the Batavia Notre Dame United Hockey team won the David McCarthy Memorial Christmas Tournament.

On Friday night, BND played Iroquois in the first round and absolutely throttled them en route to an 11-1 victory. In the game, both Brady Johnson and Sammy Pies scored a hat trick to lead United in scoring. On Saturday, BND beat Niagara Wheatfield in the championship game by a score of 5-1. In the game, Will Stevens and Sammy Pies led the team scoring 2 goals each. Pies was named the tournament MVP after leading all goal scorers with 5 goals in the two games.

The All-Tournament Team consisted of Pies, Jameson Motyka, Jacob Hutchins, Brady Johnson, Liam Berger, and Rhys Tanner.

Batavia Downs Announces Lineup for 2025 Rockin The Downs Summer Concert Series

Batavia Downs President and CEO, Byron Brown announced the lineup for the eighth annual Rockin’ the Downs Summer Concert Series.

On June 20th, Queensryche will kick off the series. On June 27th, the Allman Betts Band will perform. On July 11th, Almost Queen, a Queen tribute band will take the stage. On June 18th, The Machine, a Pink Floyd tribute band will rock the downs. On July 25th, Australia’s Little River Band will travel to Batavia to perform. On August 1st, Rochester Native, Lou Gramm will rock the stage. On August 8th, Motown legend, The Commodores will roll into the Batavia Downs. Finally, to wrap up the series on August 15th, the legendary rock band Kansas will perform in what is possibly the most famous band ever performing at the Downs.

Byron Brown said, “The Concert Series at Batavia Downs has quickly become a Western New York summertime destination. I want to thank the Board of Directors for approving the concert series and I look forward to seeing all our fans starting in June.”

Two Batavia Police Officers Injured During Incident

Howard Owens with the Batavian reports, that two City of Batavia Police Officers sustained minor injuries during a mental health incident late Saturday morning.

The Batavia Police Department responded to a location on Trumbull Parkway sometime early Saturday morning. Sometime during the incident, the officers were assaulted. The suspect was taken into custody and evaluated at Strong Memorial Hospital. The suspect’s identity has yet to be released, but Batavia PD noted that charges are “likely”. The two officers were treated at UMMC in Batavia and released shortly after.
