Governor Andrew Cuomo has declared the first-in-the-nation gun violence disaster emergency as part of a new, comprehensive strategy to build a safer New York. In a press release, he says this new strategy treats gun violence as a public health crisis, using short-term solutions to manage the immediate gun violence crisis and reduce the shooting rate, as well as long-term solutions that focus on community-based intervention and prevention strategies to break the cycle of violence. The disaster emergency allows the State to expedite money and resources to communities so they can begin targeting gun violence immediately.

The Batavia Police Department investigated a car vs. pedestrian accident that occurred around 8:30AM Tuesday at the intersection of East Main Street at Swan Street. Police said according to multiple witnesses on scene a pedestrian, 23-year-old Angel Kemp of Batavia, had the right of way walking in the crosswalk northbound across East Main Street. A Jeep, operated by 73-year-old Jean Monroe of Batavia, was making a left hand turn from Ross Street on to East Main Street. The operator of the Jeep failed to yield to the pedestrian in the crosswalk, subsequently striking the pedestrian. Kemp was transported by Mercy EMS to an awaiting Mercy Flight helicopter with serious injuries. The pedestrian was then transported to Strong Memorial Hospital and was admitted to the ICU under guarded conditions. The operator of the Jeep was issued traffic tickets for failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, speed not reasonable and prudent, failure to exercise due care, improper left turn, driver’s view obstructed and uninspected motor vehicle.

Sheriff’s deputies say they arrested 26-year-old Liza Marie Besczyznski of Pearl Street Road in Batavia. She was charged with criminal mischief and menacing. According to a press release, she damaged another person’s property and then threatened that person with a hammer. She was arraigned in town court and released on her own recognizance.

Genesee deputies arrested 30-year-old Wyatt Becker of Darien. He was charged with harassment following a domestic disturbance. He was processed and issued a court appearance ticket for August 3rd.

There will be a Democratic party caucus in Le Roy on July 20th at 7 p.m. at the town hall. Nominations will be accepted for town council and town justice.

Today’s national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $3.13, up 3 cents in the past week. One year ago, the price was $2.18. The New York State average is $3.18 – up 3 cents from last week. In Batavia, Triple-A says the price at the pump is $3.14, up 4 cents since last Monday.
