HAWLEY WANTS TO ASK RESIDENTS STATEWIDE IF THEY PREFER ‘TWO NEW YORKS’
Written by WBTA STAFF on January 30, 2019
Press Release:
Assemblyman pens letter to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) requesting the bill come before the house for a full vote. Letter to Speaker Heastie on two NYs
As a result of the high flux of controversial legislation that has passed the Assembly in recent weeks including expanding abortion, free college for illegal aliens and stricter gun control, Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) has written Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) requesting that his ‘Two New Yorks’ legislation be passed through committee and come to the house floor for a full vote.
“This is an idea that has been discussed for many years, and one which is especially popular throughout upstate New York,” Hawley said. “It has become abundantly clear in recent years that the New York City voting bloc has forgotten upstate and is imposing their radical left-wing agenda on all of us, whether we like it or not. And that is deeply troubling. This bill simply gives citizens a say on the direction of their state. If downstate politicians really don’t need upstate, as many of them claim, then there’s no harm in at least asking the question if we should be divided.”

I would pay money out of my own pocket to have two states created from New York state. Please make this happen so we are not constantly being forced to live left wing lives.
Ann Scalia On January 30, 2019 at 10:35 am
Please make this happen! I would be nothing but ecstatic if upstate New York was deprecated ftom NYC and there horrible left wing ideas

They will be happier with out us! Just tell them it’s not them, it’s us, and we need this time apart. Cuomo said there is no place in NY for Republicans or pro life believers, so lets go! We have no say, it’s two different worlds.
Al Czarniak On January 30, 2019 at 11:28 am
Don’t beg for downstate permission, demand that it happen, then take steps to make it happen. Lets get free of NYC.

We who live upstate deserve the opportunity to decide if we no longer want to be controlled by the downstate liberals. Please put this up for vote…
Don Lovelace On January 30, 2019 at 12:00 pm

I believe We would benefit by creating two states from New York State! They can have their Dictator Cuomo. Why should our tax payers pay for their high price of living, when our senior citizens live like pulpers, after working hard all their lives!
Breanne On January 30, 2019 at 1:14 pm

Although I typically side with the “radical left-wing agenda” (and live in upstate NY), I do think this is a fair question to pose. If people consistently feel that they are being undermined, overlooked and/or forgotten, then perhaps this is truly something to consider.
David Esposito On January 30, 2019 at 1:37 pm

Joan Cirillo On January 30, 2019 at 2:53 pm
I am 100% in favor of this. How can I help make it a reality?
Joann Robb On January 30, 2019 at 3:23 pm
Yes! We are often forgotten by New York government. They keep voting for the things I’m for. We keep losing our freedom and rights.
John On January 30, 2019 at 3:29 pm
Please do so. For the good of upstate N.Y.
Christopher P. Miller On January 30, 2019 at 4:02 pm
So desire this separation. This can only happen with serious backing of UPNY residence. If nothing else, we need downstate Burroughs to become their own district , like D.C.
Christopher P. Miller On January 30, 2019 at 4:05 pm
Complete agreement here. We need huge support by UPNY residents or it won’t happen. If nothing else, the five Burroughs should become a District of, similar to D.C.
Stephanie Thurston On January 30, 2019 at 4:07 pm
Yes, I believe it is long over due! I can go further in depth, but won’t! We need our elected officials to get this split legalized like Virginia and West Virginia! I say New York and Western New York. Problem is that the Hudson Valley is concerned about the money they will loose.
Jenna Hobart On January 30, 2019 at 4:41 pm
Yes!!! NYC should not speak for the rest of the state!!!
Christina Tucci On January 30, 2019 at 4:57 pm
Yes!!!! Please make this happen!!!!!
Alexander Dodson On January 30, 2019 at 4:57 pm
Like I have said more then once, NYC has not got a clue what’s going on up state. Most think up state is Albany, or dumb farmer and hicks. I am not a famer thank God, I could not work that hard. Nor am I hick I am a Republican and wish some of my taxes support them. If they so smart do it yourselves.

If this were to happen I would have no reason leave along with handfuls of other families I know. I would literally do anything for this to happen.
Patricia M Sands On January 30, 2019 at 8:58 pm
Good. Here is another thought that a neighbor once shared with me…. I don’t know if it was her original idea or if it has been bounced around….. Make NYC the financial capital of the USA (parallel with D.C. being the political capital of the USA). So NYC would not be a ‘state’ It would have funding, representatives, etc. modeled after the D.C. set up.
Cindy Shafer On January 30, 2019 at 9:39 pm
Yes
GWN On January 30, 2019 at 9:53 pm

Yes absolutely.
Barbara B Schuldenfrei On January 31, 2019 at 12:34 am
Upstate folks: You will have fewer electoral votes. If you work in the city, you will have to pay part of your state income tax to NYC. When people work in one state and live in another, the amount usually gets split. That means you will have fewer services. It doesn’t matter to me. I know longer live in NYC. I live in NC. It just that California thinks about it. I went over how difficult it would be to set us two or three governments. I’m not going to do it here. You might want to really think it over. We live in such reactive times when one side or the other has such a knee jerk reaction that a knee replacement is called for.
Ron Brown On January 31, 2019 at 4:25 am
Sign me up to cut off the scum of a city from our great state.
Ken On January 31, 2019 at 5:04 am
Tired of the liberal values from downstate being shoved down the throats of upstate New Yorkers because of the populace in the city
April Ritter On January 31, 2019 at 6:16 am
Yes! Please! If you can’t split it can you at least enact an electoral college for the state? Then the rest of us won’t have to live under NYC rule.
Susan On January 31, 2019 at 7:01 am
Yes great plan
William H. Ott On January 31, 2019 at 8:11 am
This is long overdue. On a related note I think that awarding all Electoral votes in a Presidential election to one candidate is not just wrong but voter fraud. They should be distributed by district. In NY if a district votes Repeublican their proportionate number of electoral votes not only are prevented from going to the candidate they voted for, but are given to the opposition. If this happened with a voting machine in a local poling location it would be considered fraud, and rightly so. Why is it any different with the Electoral votes in a presidential election?
Tracie On January 31, 2019 at 9:14 am
Totally yes please. Don’t wait.
Jaime O Woolgar On January 31, 2019 at 9:37 am
Yes but let’s have a public vote of an electoral college type where the city can’t overwhelm upstate with a popular vote.
Andrew Lazzaro On January 31, 2019 at 10:01 am
Yes, make it so, Separate the state! We will have to restructure welfare, medicare payments, CHIP, and funding of local taxes as we will lose money, but at least we will have the possibility of discussing it as opposed to having our voices drown out.
L. R. King On January 31, 2019 at 1:42 pm
Absolutely yes. The decisions made in Albany lean heavily to benefit New York City. Life and needs of Upstate are drastically different. We feel left out and ignored. Thank you Assemblyman Hawley for presenting this in an attempt to bring up a vote. Let’s make New York City the new “District of New York”.
Tina Wilkins On January 31, 2019 at 5:17 pm
