On this page, we spotlight the athlete or athletes who earned Player of the Game honors in the games we broadcast the previous week. We’ve been giving out Player of the Game awards since the 1960s, and for the first time, we’re now digitally honoring our winners. WBTA’s Player of the Game is brought to you by TF Brown’s.
Savannah Durham – Oakfield-Alabama Softball
In Friday’s WBTA Game of the Week against Cincinnatus in the State Semifinals, Savannah Durham delivered a dominant complete-game shutout, striking out 11 batters. At the plate, Durham also contributed offensively, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. The sophomore ace was especially impressive given the challenging conditions, pitching through extreme heat that topped 95 degrees at times and a torrential downpour in the final inning that made gripping the ball difficult. Durham’s gritty performance helped lead Oakfield-Alabama past a previously undefeated Cincinnatus squad and into the state championship game.
Allison Harkness – Oakfield-Alabama Softball
In Saturday’s WBTA Game of the Week against Windham-Ashland-Jewett in the State Championship Game, Allison Harkness played a pivotal role in Oakfield-Alabama’s 4-1 victory. Harkness went 2-for-3 at the plate with an inside-the-park home run and a double, while also reaching base on an error after another hard-hit ball to deep right field. Her home run extended the lead and shifted momentum firmly in Oakfield-Alabama’s favor. Harkness also turned in a standout defensive performance as the Hornets captured the first state championship in program history.
