HOLM Guest Speaker Series: “The Overlooked Battle of Cedar Mountain”

On May 22nd, 7:00 p.m. at Holland Land Office Museum, Michael Block will present a talk on the Battle of Cedar Mountain. On a late Saturday afternoon, August 9th 1862, in ninety degree temperatures, this battle was the concluding action of Robert E. Lee’s defense of Richmond against the Army of Potomac. Western New York’s 28th Infantry Regiment (Niagara Rifles), had recruits from Albion, Batavia, Lockport, and Medina, who participated in the bloodiest day in Culpeper County, Virginia. He incorporates period photographs and drawings combined with incidents and accounts from the men who fought at Cedar Mountain to tell the story of this often unknown and overlooked battle. Michael Block is a life-long student of the Civil War. He has been giving battlefield tours at Brandy Station, Rappahannock Station, and Cedar Mountain, and lectures in Culpeper and Fauquier Counties, Virginia since 2004. He is currently the Board Vice-President for the Friends of Cedar Mountain Battlefield and has served on the board of directors for the Brandy Station Foundation. In 2016 Mike authored a major article in the Blue & Gray Magazine, “Battle of Cedar Mountain,” and is currently working on a new book entitled, The Carnage Was Fearful, to be published by the Emerging Civil War Series later this year.
