A Batavia Police Officer was facing a dangerous situation but thanks to a citizen, willing to help, no one was injured.
Police say that Officer Darryle Streeter stopped a trespassing suspect early this morning on Cedar Street near Ellicott.
The suspect, later identified as 32 year old Brandon Fogg of Liberty Street, tried to flee. Officer Streeter took him to the ground and Fogg began to fight. The suspect then pulled a black handgun from his pocket, pointing it toward the officer.
An employee of a local business saw the fracas and came to the aid of the officer, stepping on the wrist of the suspect, making him loose his grip on the gun. It later turned out to be a BB pistol.
Fogg is jailed without bail, facing a number of charges.
BPD issued a statement of gratitude to the civilian for getting involved.
A bill banning cat declawing is on its way to Governor Cuomo’s desk. State lawmakers passed it on Tuesday, putting New York on the verge of becoming the first state in the country to outlaw the practice which involves amputating a cat’s toes back to the first knuckle. Supporters say it’s barbaric but the state Veterinarian Medical Society lobbied against the ban, saying declawing should remain legal if the pet owner has a weakened immune system and is at greater risk of infection from a cat scratch. If Cuomo signs the bill, vets face a $1,000r fine for performing declawing.
The Assembly transportation committee is expected to vote today on a measure that would allow illegal immigrants to get a state driver’s license. If it clears that hurdle, a vote in the full Assembly could happen soon.
The matter was blocked for years in the Senate when Republicans had the majority, but even though Democrats are in control now, there’s no guarantee a bill will pass.
Governor Cuomo has made passing the legislation one of his top priorities before lawmakers leave Albany June 19th.
