A search is underway for a Rochester Institute of Technology student who has been reported missing. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says that 19-year-old Eric Alcantara is just over five-feet tall, weighs about 150 pounds and has brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen wearing black pants, a red jacket, black knit cap, dark shoes and that he speaks both English and Spanish. It’s believed that Alcantara might be traveling to Great Neck, which is in Nassau County. Anyone who sees him or knows where he is should dial 911.

 

Police are still searching for the driver of a minivan that struck a utility pole on Law Street. The Wednesday afternoon accident caused a significant power surge in the area. Law enforcement believes they know who the driver was, that he’s not from the area, the vehicle was not stolen and they would like to question him about the accident. Witnesses saw a man running from the accident and provided a description to police. The crash caused roughly 300 homes on Chestnut and South Jackson to lose power. National Grid often attempts to recover damages from the driver’s insurance company (and indications are that this driver was insured) when an accident damages a utility pole. The damages, in this case, could include the pole and all of the subsequent residential repair work and any damages sustained by residents.

 

Medina Police working collaboratively with the Orleans County Major Felony Crime Task Force during an investigation and then the execution of search warrants, resulted in four arrests and felony charges against 20-year-old Nasir Shine, 19-year-old Emmanuel Taylor and 37-year-old Darrell Shine, each of Medina and 36-year-old Ebony Shine of Rochester. Investigators recovered firearms including an assault rifle and tactical shotgun, ammunition, a half-pound of cocaine, a pound of fentanyl, drug packaging materials, and $29,000 cash ($20,000 of which was for one sale of over ¼ kilogram of fentanyl). In addition, charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute controlled substances, could result in a maximum penalty of life in prison, for each of the four except for Darrell Shine.  (Photo provided by law enforcement)

 

Unemployment rates across the GLOW region for October have improved. In fact, in the 32 years the state has been tracking this data, Orleans County’s 2.5% is the lowest it’s ever been. Genesee County’s unemployment rate improved from 2.5% in September to 2.1%, the same as it is in Wyoming County. Livingston County’s jobless rate is at 2.2%. Statewide for October, the 4.4% rate represents an increase of a tenth of a percent. The Bronx had the highest jobless rate at 7.4%.

 

The holiday shopping season is underway, and the New York Department of State’s Consumer Protection Division is offering some simple tips. The agency recommends that people be careful when shopping online where there are often both fake retailers and phony consumer reviews. Also, make sure to shop on a trusted site and beware of third-party vendors. Finally, designate just one credit card and one email address for online shopping to ensure an easy review of purchases and protection in case of a dispute.

A third prize-winning ticket worth $50,000 was sold at the Arcade Market Place on Main Street. The winning ticket had four matching numbers, as well as the Powerball. The winning numbers for the Powerball drawing held on November 23 are: 1-2-31-39-66 and the Powerball is 25. By the way, no one won the jackpot, so the next drawing will be held Saturday, November 26 and will be worth $48 million.

 

 

The Buffalo Bills are now on a two-game winning streak after picking up another victory on the road. Buffalo kicker Tyler Bass hit a 45-yard field goal with just seconds left as the Bills defeated the Detroit Lions 28 to 25 at Ford Field yesterday. Quarterback Josh Allen threw two touchdown passes for the Bills who now have a record this season of eight wins and three losses. Up next for Buffalo is a road game against the New England Patriots on Thursday night, December 1st, with kickoff time at 8:15.
