Road Work in Batavia Could Interupt Traffic

Attention residents, business owners, and commuters — a heads-up about new traffic changes in Batavia.
As part of the ongoing Bank Street Streetscape Improvement Project, parking will be prohibited on Bank Street from Main Street north to Washington Street beginning at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17th. These restrictions will stay in place day and night for the duration of the project. Drivers are urged to remove all vehicles from that stretch of road before the deadline to avoid towing.
Along with the parking ban, expect lane closures and traffic disruptions throughout the workday as construction crews continue progress on the project. Delays are likely, especially during peak hours.
Officials are encouraging motorists to use alternate routes whenever possible to reduce congestion and keep both workers and drivers safe.
While the changes may cause temporary inconvenience, the long-term goal is to improve the safety, accessibility, and appearance of the Bank Street corridor.
Stay tuned for updates as the project moves forward.

Open Containers Will be Allowed in Downtown Batavia

The City of Batavia is moving forward with plans to allow open containers of alcohol within the Downtown Business Improvement District. Now that a local law has passed updating the city’s Municipal Code, officials say implementation steps are underway, including communication with businesses and a plan for signage.
The law, passed 8 to 1 by City Council, permits non-glass open containers, similar to existing Wine and Beer Walk events. All other state and local laws remain in effect.
Supporters believe the change will enhance downtown vibrancy without encouraging public intoxication or disorder. However, concerns were raised by some business owners and residents. A petition opposing the law in its current form gathered over 30 signatures, citing lack of transparency and concerns about potential consequences.
Despite the petition, city officials and BID leadership maintain that most businesses directly affected support the policy, and they plan to continue outreach and clarification efforts moving forward.
