Batavia Town Board to Hold Public Hearing on Battery Storage Moratorium

The Batavia Town Board will hold a public hearing this evening on a proposed six-month moratorium on battery energy storage systems, citing public safety concerns and the need to review local regulations.
The hearing is set for 7 p.m. at Batavia Town Hall, 3833 West Main Street Road. The moratorium is part of proposed Local Law No. 3 of 2025, introduced last month, which would temporarily halt new permits, approvals, and construction of large-scale battery storage projects across the town. Small, personal batteries for home backup or emergency use would not be affected.
The measure comes as the state investigates several battery fires and issues updated safety recommendations. Applicants who face hardship under the moratorium may request a hearing before the board for a possible exemption, and violations of the law could carry fines or other penalties.
The proposed law is available at the town clerk’s office. The public hearing is open to all residents and stakeholders, who are encouraged to attend and provide feedback. A board decision could follow.
