Batavia Downs Set for Fan Appreciation Night Saturday
Batavia Downs will wrap up the 2025 Live Racing Season this Saturday, December 20, with a holiday-style send-off highlighted by Fan Appreciation Night.
Fans can enjoy two-dollar betting vouchers while supplies last, one-dollar programs, prize giveaways, and a special visit from Santa Claus. The night also features a fun Christmas showdown race between the Grinch and an Elf, plus opportunities to meet some of the sport’s top drivers.
Batavia Downs President and CEO Byron Brown says the event is a way to thank loyal fans after a strong season, which included the New York Sire Stakes Night of Champions. Live Racing General Manager Nicolle Fortes echoed that appreciation, calling the night a celebration of longtime racing supporters.
Post time is 5 p.m., parking and valet are free, and fans can dine in the Clubhouse with reservations. Racing at Batavia Downs resumes with the Winter Meet beginning January 13.
HomeCare & Hospice Seeks Volunteers in Genesee County
HomeCare & Hospice is urgently seeking volunteers in Genesee County to provide companionship and support to hospice patients receiving care at home.
While medical teams handle clinical needs, volunteers help by offering conversation, comfort, and a caring presence for patients and families.
Volunteer Coordinator Patricia Meek says hospice patients often face isolation, and even small acts — like visiting, reading, or listening — can make a meaningful difference.
Volunteers of all backgrounds are welcome, with training provided and flexible scheduling available.
Anyone interested can contact HomeCare & Hospice at 585-343-7596.
Opposition Grows to Proposed STAMP Data Center
Allies of the Tonawanda Seneca Nation are strongly opposing a large data center proposed for the STAMP site in the Town of Alabama.
In a press release issued Tuesday, local residents and advocacy groups criticized plans by STREAM U.S. Data Centers for a 2.2-million-square-foot facility that would be the largest of its kind in Western New York. The group is calling on the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to take over as lead agency for the environmental review, rather than the Genesee County Economic Development Center.
Opponents argue GCEDC has a conflict of interest and say the project threatens wetlands, local quality of life, and the sovereignty of the Tonawanda Seneca Nation, whose territory borders the site. They also cite concerns about energy use, diesel emissions, wastewater disposal, and limited job creation.
GCEDC’s STAMP Committee and Board are scheduled to meet Thursday afternoon to consider reestablishing lead agency status under state environmental review rules.
