The Genesee Community College volleyball team had one of its most memorable matches Thursday night against visiting Monroe Community College.

After being out-scored 50-36 in the first two sets and down 2-0, the Cougars rallied to take the next three sets starting with a 25-20 win in the third. That momentum carried over into complete domination for the final two sets as the Cougars more than doubled the point total of their Rochester opponents in both of those final two sets.

Genesee took the fourth set, 25-12, and continued to pour it on with a 15-6 win in the fifth-and-deciding set for the 3-2 win.

The rally began from the get-go of the third set when Genesee opened up with a 4-0 lead. After Monroe got back to even at 9-9, the Cougars restored that initial four-point lead at 13-9. The Tribunes got within a pair of points several times with the last closest attempt to catch Genesee at 22-20.

All told, the Cougars never trailed in the third set and it set the stage for one of their most dominating sets of the season in the fourth.

After trailing 3-2, Genesee got 16 of the next 18 points with the last three being service aces from Ana Carolina Cerezer Pinto. From that point on, each team scored seven with the final being 25-12 to tie the match at 2-2.
The fifth and deciding set was all Genesee after the Cougars broke open a 2-2 tie with eight of the next nine points for a 10-3 lead. Genesee finished off Monroe with five of the last eight points for a 15-6 win in the set and 3-2 match win.

Pinto led the team in aces (4), kills (12) and digs (30). Lyndsey Rowland and Kaitlyn VanSkiver each had a team-high pair of blocks.
Audriana Reeves and Grace Zandrowicz combined for an additional 31 digs with the former having 16 to the latter’s 15. Three Cougars contributed seven kills each that included: Sha-Ony Obispa, Rowland and Zandrowicz.
