Senator Michael H. Ranzenhofer is advocating for a new set of common-sense solutions to address New York’s ailing business climate so that more hard-working families can live, work and thrive in Western New York. The Re-Open New York for Business Plan is in response to Senate Democrats outright rejection of the Amazon HQ2 project, costing New Yorkers 25,000 new jobs and $27.5 billion in revenue.

The comprehensive jobs plan includes:

Fighting for Meaningful Tax Cuts for Small Businesses, including a $495 million income tax exemption for Small Businesses & Farmers, as well as a STAR program for Small Businesses, achieving another $275 million in savings;

According to a new law in New York State, residents who are considered mentally ill by a judge can now have their second amendment rights taken away.
Governor Cuomo signed the Red Flag Bill yesterday which allows teachers and family members who suspect someone poses harm to report it to a judge.
The judge can then evaluate and determine whether the person’s guns should be confiscated.

The governor pointed to several school shootings where teachers say there were signs prior to the shooting that the shooter may have posed a risk.
Opponents to the bill argue that the legislation will allow people to easily strip gun owners of their rights.

Batavia City Council was embroiled in another emotion filled evening as the abortion issue continued to be debated at their Monday night meeting.
Seventeen speakers made public comments to council before they proceeded with their conference meeting, fifteen staunchly anti-abortion and two Pro-Choice.
Council ultimately decided by an 8 to 1 vote not to consider a resolution drafted by Council member Rose Mary Christian opposing the recently-passed New York Reproductive Health Act.
Christian cast the only vote to move the resolution to the board’s next Business meeting.
A visibly disappointed majority of the 125 people in attendance in council chambers began to file out after several people were kicked out for speaking out of turn.

National grid has been diligent with repairs and response due to the high winds that damaged power lines in the area.
Currently there are less than 5 customers still waiting for power restoration in Batavia with the remainder of the county back online.

A bill that could lead to a ban on the sale of tobacco products at pharmacies will start making its way through the state legislature this week.
Supporters say it’d be a big step towards limiting exposure to those products which have been known to cause serious health problems.
Data shows 25-thousand New Yorkers die from tobacco-related issues each year.
If approved, pharmacies would have one year to follow the ban or face a two-thousand dollar fine for each violation.

State lawmakers will be back in Albany after having the last several days off.
Their focus is expected to be on passing the state budget which is due in a few weeks.
One item that won’t be in the fiscal plan is a proposed ban on stretch limousines.
Governor Cuomo pitched the idea during his budget address in response to a deadly limo crash in Schoharie that killed 20 people.
Limo companies hit back at the governor after he announced the measure, arguing that it would cripple business

Travel advisories are in effect in Monroe, Livingston, Orleans and Yates Counties until further notice.
Drivers can still be on the road but are being urged to use caution.
Some early morning flights out of Greater Rochester International Airport have also been delayed or canceled.
This same storm is responsible for extensive damage and power outages in other parts of Western New York.
According to National Grid there are approximately 1,400 customers without power in Genesee County as of this morning.
Workers are currently assessing the conditions in much of the county and they expect power to be restored to over 400 customers in Alabama by 6 p.m. tonight and around 200 in Batavia by 4 p.m. this afternoon.

High Wind Warning and Winter Weather Advisory in Effect

From the National Weather Service:

DANGEROUS WINDS AND FLASH FREEZE LATE THIS EVENING

Very strong and damaging winds will continue this evening from
the Lake Erie shore northeastward across the Niagara Frontier
and Genesee Valley. Peak wind gusts will reach 75 mph at
times.

Winds of this magnitude will result in extensive damage to trees
and power lines, widespread power outages, and property damage to
roofs and siding. Buildings which are under construction and older
deteriorating buildings may experience significant damage or even
collapse.

This is a particularly dangerous situation! If you must travel be
prepared for extensive damage and downed power lines. Always
assume power lines are live. Falling trees and power lines will
create a very dangerous environment to be outside in, including in
vehicles. Seek shelter in a substantial building until the
strongest of the winds begin to subside.

In addition to the very strong winds, temperatures will also fall
below freezing as we progress through the late afternoon and
early evening hours. This will result in the rapid freezing up of
water on untreated roadways, leading to areas of ice that could
make travel hazardous, particularly on bridges and overpasses. If
you must travel, be sure to slow down and exercise caution.

From WBTA News:

At early Sunday evening winds at the Genesee County Airport were out of the Southwest at 32mph.
A Peak Gust was recorded at 63mph.

Numerous tree limbs and wires have been reported down throughout Genesee County.

National Gid reported 4,600 customers with power in the county, half in the City and Town of Batavia.  The utility’s website says that an estimated time of power restoration is being assessed.

HAWLEY CALLS FOR STATE PRISONS TO REMAIN OPEN AMID GOV.’S SHUTDOWN EFFORT

Press Release:

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) is calling for all state prisons to remain open and operating today amid a subtle announcement by the governor late Friday to close three unspecified state prisons. The plan was buried in a release of Gov. Cuomo’s 30-Day Amendments as changes to his Executive Budget proposal.

“Closing any state prisons would have dire consequences for public safety and the brave correctional officers who work with our incarcerated population,” Hawley said. “By consolidating the prison population, we run the risk of double bunking inmates and exacerbate the high number of violent attacks against corrections officers we have seen in recent years. This is not about a declining prison population, this is about the governor scrambling to save money to cover up his $2.3 billion budget shortfall – a terrible solution for an even worse self-inflicted problem.”

RYAN HOMES BREAKS GROUND AT OAKWOOD HILLS LOCATION

Press Release:

BATAVIA, NY – The Genesee County Economic Development Center is pleased by the announcement today that Ryan Homes has officially broken ground on its new residential project in Oakwood Hills in Batavia.

Ryan Homes broke ground on the first of 56 new homes which vary in size ranging from 1,483 square feet to 2,190 square feet. Affordably priced and located conveniently to all Genesee County has to offer, these new sites will sell quickly.

The Oakwood Hills project will provide single-tenant living along with homes containing up to five bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, and a basement. All of the homes are designed with an open floor plan that places an emphasis on allowing natural light to come into the homes. The homes will be affordably priced from the $190’s.

“The growth happening within Batavia is undeniable, so it is extremely satisfying for us to be a part of fostering that growth by building more housing options for both residents and newcomers alike,” said Shawn Benzer, Regional Sales and Marketing Manager of Ryan Homes.

The Oakwood Hills development is located within a community experiencing significant business activity. Food and beverage manufacturing companies have invested nearly $500 million into the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park, and the next phases of development at the 1,250-acre WNY STAMP campus and Batavia’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative are catalyzing future growth.

“More people will be moving to Batavia and Genesee County as new opportunities and businesses open up, which means we need more housing options,” said Steve Hyde, President and CEO of the Genesee County Economic Development Center. “Batavia is filled with so many incredible people and providing both current and future residents with beautiful places to call home is a strong asset in our continued economic growth.”

The new construction by Ryan Homes also supports Genesee County’s Smart Growth development plan and the need identified in county’s 2018 market analysis for new single-family homes. The analysis projects a housing demand for over 1,100 new single-family homes by 2040 in a mid-range growth scenario for Genesee County.

“As we recently learned from our housing needs assessment, the rise of new businesses and attractions locating in Genesee County over the next 20 years will lead to a rapidly growing demand for new housing options,” said Felipe Oltramari, director of the Genesee County Planning Department. “Targeted new home construction in Batavia helps meet our housing needs as our county continues to grow, and supports Genesee County’s Smart Growth development plan.”

Ryan Homes encourages interested prospective tenants to join a VIP list at RyanHomes.com to be the first to get information on the community and exclusive access to VIP-only offers like special pricing and incentives for the early birds.

BDC BOARD REVIEWS 2018 RESULTS AND SETS 2019 GOALS

Press Release:

BATAVIA, NY – The Batavia Development Corporation (BDC) Board of Directors reviewed the agency’s 2018 results and set goals for 2019 at their last board meeting. In 2018 the BDC assisted 8 projects that invested $3.5 million and pledged to create 38 new jobs. The JJ Newberry Building, award winner of the Robert Macon Award from the Community Design Center of Rochester, was the signature project opening its doors in February of 2018.

“The BDC is positioned to help small businesses and building owners in the City advance their projects,” said Pier Cipollone, President of the Batavia Development Corporation. “We are also working to advance the Batavia Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) sites including Ellicott Station, Creek Park, City Centre, the Medical Corridor and the Harvester Campus.”

Other planning efforts guiding the BDC’s work include the recently updated Comprehensive Plan and Downtown Revitalization Investment (DRI) Strategy.
“The BOA, Comprehensive Plan and DRI Plan were created through a civic engagement model that allowed input and direction from the community to create a road map for land use and economic development in the City,” said Martin Moore, City of Batavia Manager. “The plans identify some of the most pressing issues in the City including blighted, contaminated and underutilized sites, housing issues and recommendations to reverse these trends.”

With the DRI award of $10 million the BDC plays a critical role in overseeing and advancing DRI projects. Currently the BDC is working with all of the DRI project owners and multiple state agencies to coordinate and assist projects. The BDC successfully launched the $600,000 Batavia DRI Building Improvement Fund and is in the process of working with applicants before final selections are made.

“The momentum and excitement of the DRI has attracted new businesses and developers across the City,” said Rachael Tabelski, Director of Economic Development for the Batavia Development Corporation. “We will start to see scaffolding and construction starting in 2019.”

BDC Board approved 2019 goals:

1. Secure capital/ business commitments of $5 million.
2. Secure business pledges to create 25 jobs.
3. Secure a micro-enterprise grant/ loan program for the City of Batavia to foster new start-up businesses.
4. Achieve the BDC’s 2019-2020 budget.
5. Successfully administer and implement the Batavia DRI Building Improvement program.
6. Encourage, enable and incentivize downtown building owners to add new upper floor apartments and new residential living in the City of Batavia.
7. Participate in the City’s environmental investigation and planning around the BOA Creek Park site.
8. Continue to enhance the BDC’s value and build strong relationships with the City of Batavia government, schools, businesses and residents, and other economic development organizations.

Get Pumped Up About Heart Health

News Release:

The Genesee, Orleans, and Wyoming County Health Departments are encouraging county residents to “Choose Health.” By taking small steps in our day-to-day living and making positive health choices, people have the ability to change their future health for the better.

During an average lifespan, the heart beats more than two billion times. The heart is vital to your health and without it blood wouldn’t be able to move through your body. February is American Heart Month, a time to remember how important this muscle is and educate ourselves on how to take better care of it since it is the reason we are alive.

According to the New York State Department of Health, more people die of cardiovascular diseases than all other causes of death combined. In fact, approximately 610,000 people die in the United States every year from heart disease, making the disease accountable for 1 in every 4 deaths. In 2015, Genesee County had 201 deaths from cardiovascular disease, Orleans County had 144 deaths, and Wyoming County had 120 deaths. The most common cardiovascular disease is coronary heart disease (CHD), killing an average of 370,000 people every year. This disease occurs when the small blood vessels that carry oxygen and blood to our hearts get very narrow. Coronary heart disease is usually caused by a condition called atherosclerosis, which occurs when fatty material and a substance called plaque builds up on the walls of your arteries. Plaque is a waxy substance that forms in the artery wall made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium and other substances. The buildup forces the arteries to become narrow, slowing down or completely stopping the blood flow to the heart. Narrowing of the arteries can lead to chest pains (stable angina), shortness of breath, or even heart attack.

Heart disease has a close relationship to lifestyle choices. This is why it is so important that you make healthy decisions, participate in physical activity, and eat healthy. The New York State Department of Health recommends people of all ages engage in physical activity for at least 30 minutes on all or most days of the week. If you do not exercise at all, start slow and discuss with your doctor steps you should take to get active and help improve your heart health. This may include going to the gym, getting involved in a sport, or even walking the mall with a friend. You can even break the exercise up and do 10 minutes three times a day building up to 30 minutes a day, if 30 minutes all at once seems to be too overwhelming. By repeating these small changes daily, they are likely to turn into a habit and your heart will thank you for it in the long run.

It is also important when focusing on heart health to pay close attention to nutrition. Poor nutrition can lead to many health problems, including high blood cholesterol levels, obesity, and diabetes. Consuming food high in saturated fat (whole milk, butter, and red meats), trans fats (foods with hydrogenated oils like boxed cookies, crackers, and doughnuts) or sodium (found in many processed foods) can increase your risk of getting heart disease. To improve you’re eating habits and lower risks of heart disease you can eat more fruits and vegetables, limit processed foods, eat foods high in fiber, reduce your sodium intake and limit trans fats, saturated fats, and cholesterol. When choosing to eat meats avoid red meats and go for lean meat instead, these would include meats such as lean ground turkey, fish, and skinless chicken. “Staying on track when it comes to eating healthy can be a difficult thing to do but is extremely necessary to stay healthy and prevent cardiovascular disease,” states Paul Pettit, Public Health Director for Genesee and Orleans Counties.

Although poor nutrition and lack of exercise are linked to an increased risk of heart disease, the single largest risk factor is smoking. Smokers are twice as likely to have a heart attack as nonsmokers are, and are between two and four times more likely to die suddenly from heart disease. This is due to the nicotine in cigarettes raising blood pressure and the carbon monoxide limiting the amount of oxygen that can be carried by your blood. Although you may not smoke, exposure to smoke in the home and workplace has also been shown to increase risk from the second hand smoke. Talk with family members about quitting smoking or discuss designated smoke areas to reduce second hand smoke. The New York State Smoker’s Quitline is a great resource for free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and support services. Call 1-866-NY-QUITS (1-866-697-8487) or visit www.nysmokefree.com.

There are also other factors that increase your risk for heart disease. Unfortunately some of those factors may be out of your control. One factor happens to be gender. For example, men in their 40’s have a higher risk of heart disease than women. However, as women get older, their risk increases so that it is almost equal to a man’s risk. Secondly, genetics can play a role in developing heart disease. If someone in your family has had heart disease, especially before age fifty, your own risk increases as you age. It is especially important that precautions are taken and healthy habits are made in order to decrease risk of developing heart disease.

So how do I know if I am having a heart attack? Well, here are some signs:

 Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and then comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or just pain
 Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. This can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach
 Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort
 Breaking into a cold sweat
 Nausea
 Lightheadedness
 Palpitations (feeling like your heart is pounding or beating fast)

It is important to understand that men and women often have different signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Women are more likely to experience the less known symptoms of the jaw and back pain, nausea and vomiting. Unfortunately, many people are unsure of what is happening to their body and wait to seek help instead of going in right away to find out what is wrong. It is important to learn the signs, but also remember that even if you are not sure if it is a heart attack, to tell a doctor about your symptoms. Just one call to the doctors, explaining your symptoms could save your life. Minutes matter! If you think you are having a heart attack, do not wait more than five minutes to call 9-1-1.

This anthology, directed by Norman R. Gayford, professor of English, is a collection of five short pieces, with poetry interludes, that use stories to explore a variety of issues facing society today.

1. The Unspoken 200, written by Ehinomen Okojie of Winston-Salem, NC, attempts to reverse the desensitization that results from using hashtags to summarize tragedies, while telling the story of the 2014 kidnapping of 276 female students their school in Nigeria.
2. Save the Date, written by Caity-Shea Violette of Boston, MA, shows the play’s main character, Andrea, just hours before her wedding, meeting her estranged lover in a park. In a tug-of-war between passion and timing, they explore the expiration date of “the one that got away.”
3. Sister, written by Kita Mehaffy of Santa Fe, NM, tells the story of Andréa, down on her luck, who sees Alex in the park early one Sunday morning. Looking for signs of humanity in a woman who had previously looked right through her, Andréa says “Sometimes being invisible wears on a girl.”
4. Summer Storms, written by Jaisey Bates of Los Angeles, CA, was inspired by two phrases: “they were dancing” and “I had a dream, but now I’m woke.” These words, created in the wake of the tragedies that took place during the summer of 2016 “support mutual healing, strengthened community and positive change,” Bates said.
5. Boulder Holder, written and performed by Crystal Jackson of Pacific Grove, CA, is a powerful one-minute scene about violence in schools.

Press Release:

Byron, NY – Wednesday, February 13, 2019 marked the finale of the month-long community service fundraising project spearheaded by the Byron-Bergen Elementary School Student Council. The entire student body assembled to present the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department with a check for $1,762.04.

The community service project, Dollars for Destro, raised funds for the training and care of the Genesee County Sheriff Department’s new K-9 officer, Deputy Frankie. The county’s previous K-9 officer, Destro, passed away recently. Destro was a visible member of the Byron-Bergen community and many students were very fond of him.

“The students were upset when Destro passed away,” said Byron-Bergen Elementary School Assistant Principal Betsy Brown. “I’m so proud that they were able to take that sadness and turn it into a positive experience and begin building a new relationship with Frankie.”

Every year the Elementary School Student Council takes on a community service project. “It was a no-brainer that we wanted to help the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office raise money for a new dog,” said Student Council President Roman Smith. “Frankie is a great addition and we are his number one fans.”

The original goal was for every grade level to raise $100. Every grade surpassed this goal and the third graders earned a pizza party with Frankie by raising more than three times their original goal.
