Collins Announces Funds for Falls ARS Fitness Center

News Release

Congressman Chris Collins (NY-27) today announced that funding for a state-of-the-art fitness facility at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station (ARS) is included in an appropriations bill expected to pass the House this week. Original proposals for this facility were included in the Fiscal Year 2021 budget, although Collins worked with the Air Force and House Appropriations Committee to have the funding expedited to this year.

“The men and women who bravely serve in the 914th Airlift Wing and the Air National Guard 107th Airlift Wing currently do not have a fitness facility that meets their needs,” said Collins. “After learning of this problem, I have done everything in my power to speed along funding for a new facility to make sure that our servicemen and women are prepared to do the job they so courageously have volunteered to do.”

Collins noted that the current fitness facility does not include an indoor track, leaving service members without a place to run during the winter months. This has forced service members to delay parts of their physical fitness assessments for up to six months, threatening their ability to serve when called upon.

Additionally, the facility has become physically dangerous because there is not enough space to follow effective safety protocols. Space constraints have also led to road closures around the base during the summer months when roads are being used for service members to complete their physical fitness tests.

Collins added: “Our nation’s military faced years of neglect under President Obama, and we unfortunately saw these shortfalls in Western New York at the Niagara Falls ARS. Now that President Trump is in office, we are finally making critical investments to increase readiness and modernize operations. I would like to thank the Trump Administration and the House Appropriations Committee for prioritizing this project and for their commitment to the men and women who serve in Niagara Falls.”

The House is expected to vote Friday on H.R. 5895 – Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2019 [Energy and Water, Legislative Branch, and Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act, 2019]. To read a copy of H.R. 5895, click here.

Sheriff Reports “Distraction” Burglaries

News Release

The Genesee County Sheriffs Office has been investigating several “distraction” residential burglaries that occurred within minutes of each other about 3:15PM on the afternoon of June 2, 2018 in the Towns Pembroke and Batavia.

The first report involved a residence on the Batavia-Elba Townline Road, Town of Batavia, where an elderly resident was approached by a man operating a white colored, possibly a KIA, SUV who said he was checking the phone lines and asked to see where the lines were buried in the backyard. Walking out back with the man, another person entered the home and removed cash and jewelry. The crime was interrupted by a relative and the suspects entered the SUV in the driveway and left in a westerly direction. The KIA did not have a front license plate and the rear hatch was open so a rear plate was not visible. The only descriptions provided were two Hispanic males aged 30 to 40 years old, one of whom was wearing a baseball cap, and a black male, aged 30-40 years old.

The second report was made involved a residence on the Indian Falls Road, T/Pembroke where a light brown-skinned male in his late 20s to early 30s knocked on the front door and asked to be shown some trees in the back yard that needed to be cut down. Although suspicious of the man’s story, the resident walked out back while a second person, described similarly to the first male, knocked on the front door which was answered by another resident. During the conversation, the resident saw a third person, described as a light-skinned brown male, similarly aged, exit a side door of the residence. All three then got into a white-colored SUV having no front license plate, leave in a westerly direction. A check of the residence revealed that nothing appeared to have been taken.

In both instances, the man in the back yard had either a telephone or two way radio which is typical of this type of crime, usually referred to as Gypsy activity, where elderly residents are usually targeted. The Sheriffs Office is working with a national organization comprised of law enforcement members that monitor and track this type activity.

It is likely that other residents were similarly approached on June 2nd (Saturday) and may have additional identification information that could assist the Sheriffs Office (585 343-5000).

Pembroke and O-A Schools Awarded technology Funding

News Release:

As part of the $2 billion Smart School Bond Act that was approved by voters in 2014, Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) announced today that both Pembroke and Oakfield-Alabama Central School Districts will be receiving funding to make technology and security upgrades in their schools.

“Technology is ever-changing and that means the way our students learn must be ever-changing and adaptable as well. The whole idea behind the Smart Schools Investments was to provide a higher quality of education for our students and bring every classroom up to par with the digital age of tablets, lap top computers, whiteboards and high-speed wireless internet access,” Hawley said.

In addition to technology and internet capabilities, a portion of the funding will be allotted to high-tech security upgrades. Hawley wrote Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie earlier this year asking for $50,000 per school statewide to hire armed resource officers. Furthermore, he recently introduced legislation that would make it easier for school districts to hire armed security personnel.

“The safety and security of our students is preeminent and I am glad some of this funding will go toward technological security upgrades,” Hawley continued. “Our students, teachers and faculty deserve to feel safe and protected from the moment they step inside a school and that starts with taking a proactive approach.”

Sunday News Briefing

The financially beleaguered YWCA of Genesee County has put its North Street building up for sale.
The building has been home to YW for the 50 years.
In a statement released yesterday, YW Executive Director Millie Tomidy-Pepper said the building will be sold or fully leased out.
If leased, she expects the YW would remain in the building as a tenant.
Earlier this year the YW was forced to suspend some of its programming and find other providers for the services.
Among those programs were the YW’s School Daycare and Crisis Hot-Line.
The statement went on to say that the agency needs to shift its focus from building maintenance to its core mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.

YWCA Issues Statement on Status of the Agency

Editors Note: The following statement was issued to WBTA by Millie Tomidy-Pepper, Executive Director of the YWCA of Genesee County

Dear Friends,
On behalf of the YWCA, I want to update you on the status of the agency. First and foremost, we are Open! As many of you know, in March of this year, the YWCA of Genesee County was without the means to meet its financial obligations. Quite simply, if it were not for the generous financial support of Nancy and Bill Brach of Brach Machine in Batavia, our doors would have closed and services to the community would have ceased immediately! While this was a daunting time, the Brach’s financial support afforded us an opportunity to assess the situation and define a path forward for the 108 year old organization.

A strategic planning process commenced and many heartfelt hours were spent determining the complexities of the situation. We evaluated if the organization could regain viability. Our goal: to make decisions that not only assured the survival of the organization but ensured the organization would thrive to meet the needs of this generation and many more to come.

While the strategic plan is an ongoing process, several critical decisions have been made that we would like to share with the community. With a focus on the organizations mission and the fiscal viability of each program, the decision was made to transition the School Daycare Program, Care and Crisis Line and Child and Adult Care Food Program to other providers. We approached the conversion of each program with care to assure a seamless transition for all involved. The reduction of these programs will allow the YWCA to rebuild its fiscal infrastructure while focusing its attention on our Domestic Violence Services and Courthouse Daycare Programs.

Additionally, after countless hours of deliberation the decision was made to sell (or fully lease) the building the YW has called home for over 50 years. This decision was bittersweet, but if we are to secure a place for the YWCA’s future, we need to shift our focus from building maintenance to our core mission — eliminating racism and empowering women. In short, our home for the last 50 years will make the next 50 years possible. We are excited for the opportunities this reorganization period will bring to help us use our resources more responsibly, eliminate all debt and allow us to invest in the future as our founding sisters once did. We will also take the lead to stand against racism, inequality, sexism and hate crimes as they continue to dominate the headlines in our nation today.

In closing, we are forever grateful for the outpouring of community support shown us. From community fundraisers to roof repairs, tech support, volunteerism, donations and pots of flowers left on our front porch… all are incredible acts of kindness…thank you!

Saturday News Briefing

The YWCA has decided to sell the building it has called home for the past 50 years.

Boyfriend who admitted to burying a young mother off a farm in Sodus accused of repeatedly reentering the country illegally.

Summer offered some words of wisdom to new college students, “things may seem scary and overwhelming at first, but it gets better as long as you try!” She cites her parents as the major influences in her life, saying that they’ve always pushed her to try her hardest, and they never gave up on her.
