UPDATE: Power Failure

A power failure has affected about 5300 customers of National Grid in Batavia and surrounding communities.
The outage began at 12:55 p.m. when a high voltage line was reported down on Evans Street in the city. At nearly the same time, a transformer exploded and caught fire nears Dan’s Tire at the City Centre Mall.
It’s not clear if the two incidents are related or which one occurred first.
The outage has affected traffic signals in several locations around the city.
Police say if you approach a traffic signal that is not functioning, the intersection must be treated as a four way stop.
National Grid is updating the situation every 15 minutes.
The outage is affecting a wide areas of the city of Batavia and areas to the west and south, although there is no defined perimeter to the outage.
