LEVEL 3 SEX OFFENDER ACCUSED OF FAILING TO REGISTER ONLINE ACCOUNTS

Batavia Police say a Level 3 sex offender was using nine internet identifiers that had not been registered with authorities.
Thirty-three-year-old Travis Jemison of Batavia is charged with failing to register those identifiers as required for registered sex offenders. Jemison was arraigned in Batavia City Court and sent to the Genesee County Jail in lieu of bail.
Also in the latest Batavia Police blotter, 29-year-old Zachary Burk of Batavia faces two counts each of criminal contempt and aggravated family offense. Police say the charges stem from two separate alleged violations of an order of protection. Burk was also remanded to the county jail.
Forty-two-year-old Sean Connolly of Le Roy was charged with DWI following an East Main Street traffic stop, while 43-year-old Mark Tooley of Batavia faces a drug possession charge stemming from a traffic stop dating back to March of last year.
The latest blotter also includes 53-year-old Duane Mather of Medina, who was charged with criminal contempt.

BATAVIA SEEKING PROJECTS FOR $10 MILLION DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION

Batavia is looking for projects that could share in the city’s latest $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative award.
The city has opened its application process for proposals involving downtown development, building renovations, public improvements and other projects that could have a significant impact on the downtown area.
Batavia received its second $10 million DRI award from New York State in April, following its first award in 2018.
Even projects included in the city’s original application must submit a new application to be considered for funding.
The deadline is 5 p.m. September 4th. City officials are also encouraging prospective applicants to speak with the DRI consulting team before submitting their proposals.

ROAD RESURFACING UNDERWAY IN BATAVIA

Drivers should expect delays on several Batavia streets beginning today as the city starts three days of resurfacing work.
Crews are scheduled to work today on Cone and Warren streets, along with Garfield Avenue and Watson Street. Work is planned between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
On Wednesday, resurfacing moves to Maple Street, Morton Avenue and Ganson Avenue, followed by Union Street on Thursday.
Local residents will still be able to access their properties, but delays are expected. Drivers are asked to find alternate routes and avoid parking on affected streets during construction.
The schedule is weather dependent.

SIDEWALK WORK RESUMES ON NORTH LYON STREET

Drivers in Batavia should expect a road closure on North Lyon Street beginning Tuesday.
E.J. Militello Concrete will resume sidewalk replacement work, removing old sections and installing new sidewalks along the west side of the street.
North Lyon Street will be closed to through traffic from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. while crews are working. Drivers are being asked to use alternate routes.
Residents along North Lyon should also park on the east side of the street during construction.

MANGIONE STATE MURDER TRIAL POSTPONED

Luigi Mangione’s state murder trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been postponed indefinitely.
The trial had been scheduled to begin September 8th, but Mangione’s attorneys are now seeking to have the state case dismissed on double jeopardy grounds.
That argument follows Mangione’s guilty plea Friday to federal stalking charges, when he admitted shooting and killing Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel in December of 2024.
Mangione’s lawyers argue the state and federal prosecutions punish him for the same underlying conduct. Manhattan prosecutors disagree and plan to fight the dismissal request.
A judge has given prosecutors until October 9th to respond, with a hearing scheduled for December 10th.
Mangione is scheduled for federal sentencing eight days later, where prosecutors intend to seek life in prison.

TRUMP THREATENS OMAN AS IRAN TALKS REACH CRITICAL POINT

President Donald Trump is again threatening military action against Oman as efforts continue to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran says it has reached a preliminary agreement with Oman on a new shipping route through the strait, which carried roughly one-fifth of the world’s traded oil before the war. Details are still being finalized.
Trump told Fox News the United States could bomb Oman if the country interferes with American objectives in the region. His comments come as a 60-day negotiating window for a broader U.S.-Iran peace agreement expires with major differences unresolved.
Elsewhere, U.S. envoy Jared Kushner met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the future of the Gaza ceasefire, while Houthi rebels claimed new attacks on vessels in the Red Sea.
Drone attacks also targeted two senior officials in northern Iraq, although no casualties were reported.

JIM KELLY GOLF CLASSIC RETURNS TO BATAVIA

A longtime Western New York charity tradition returned to Batavia Monday, as Jim Kelly hosted his 39th annual Celebrity Golf Classic at Terry Hills.
The event once again brought together former Bills players, NFL legends and other celebrities to raise money for the Kelly for Kids Foundation.
Among those taking part were Thurman Thomas, John Fina and Pro Football Hall of Famer Sterling Sharpe.
Kelly says the tournament has now helped generate more than seven-million dollars for organizations serving disadvantaged and disabled children across the region.
Next year will mark the event’s 40th anniversary, and Kelly says plans are already underway for an even bigger celebration.
