SEVERAL ARRESTED FOLLOWING BATAVIA POLICE INVESTIGATIONS

Several people are facing charges following recent investigations by Batavia Police.
Twenty-one-year-old Kasey Clark of Batavia is accused of fleeing a traffic stop on Cedar Street and leading officers on a pursuit that ended near Center and School Streets. Clark faces charges including first-degree reckless endangerment, weapons possession, unlawful fleeing and DWI.
Twenty-four-year-old Jack Demarzo is also accused of fleeing a traffic stop on a motorcycle. Police did not pursue him, but say they identified and arrested him later that evening.
In another case, 34-year-old Eddie Burnworth of West Virginia faces a DWI charge under Leandra’s Law after an accident on Oak Street. Police allege Burnworth was intoxicated with a four-year-old child in the vehicle.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

BATAVIA’S DEWITT RECREATION AREA GETS $500,000 FOR IMPROVEMENTS

A half-million dollars in state funding is coming to Batavia for improvements at DeWitt Recreation Area.
The project will include shoreline stabilization around DeWitt Pond, new accessible pathways and boardwalks, reconstruction of the fishing platform and upgrades to stormwater and drainage infrastructure.
State officials say the work will improve safety and accessibility while strengthening recreational opportunities and connections between the park, the Ellicott Trail and downtown Batavia.
The funding comes through New York’s County Infrastructure Grant Program.
Another one-million dollars is headed to Dansville to support two housing projects. Those include the redevelopment of the historic King’s Sons and Daughters Building into 12 apartments and the proposed 48-unit Balloon Lofts development.
Altogether, the Batavia and Dansville projects will receive one-and-a-half-million dollars from the state.

GLOW CORPORATE CUP DONATION BENEFITS BERGEN COMMUNITY CENTER

The 13th annual GLOW Corporate Cup is giving back to the Bergen community following another successful event.
More than 900 people participated in this year’s walk and run, with proceeds benefiting the GLOW YMCA Scholarship Program.
As part of the event, Corporate Flooring Innovations of Bergen won the annual T-shirt contest, earning a 500-dollar charitable donation provided by the local Merrill Lynch office.
The company selected Bergen’s Gillam-Grant Community Center to receive the money and recently presented the organization with a ceremonial check.
The donation will support the center’s recreational, educational and community programs serving children, adults and seniors throughout the Bergen area.

NATIONAL GRID DONATES BACKPACKS TO BATAVIA STUDENTS

National Grid is helping local students start the new school year with the supplies they need.
The company donated 100 backpacks filled with school supplies Wednesday to the Batavia City School District. The backpacks will be distributed to children in need across the district.
The donation was made in partnership with the United Way of Rochester and the Finger Lakes as part of a larger effort across the region.
In all, National Grid is donating two-thousand backpacks filled with school supplies to students in communities throughout Western New York ahead of the upcoming school year.

U.S. EXPANDS ECONOMIC PRESSURE ON IRAN

The Trump administration is dramatically expanding its economic campaign against Iran, warning countries and companies around the world to cut financial ties with Tehran or risk U.S. sanctions.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says new secondary sanctions are designed to block virtually every potential source of revenue flowing into Iran. The Treasury Department has already sanctioned nearly 60 Iran-linked entities tied to the country’s nuclear and missile programs, cyber activities and oil shipments.
Bessent says countries can no longer operate in what he called the “gray spaces” of the conflict, warning that economic engagement with Iran could expose trading partners to American penalties. China, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates have been among Iran’s largest trading partners.
Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the United States is not ruling out renewed military strikes against Iran, although he says economic pressure remains Washington’s focus for now.

WALL STREET MIXED AS INVESTORS AWAIT BIG WEEK

U.S. stocks finished mixed Monday as investors look ahead to several potentially market-moving events later this week.
The S&P 500 slipped three-tenths of a percent, while the Nasdaq fell eight-tenths. The Dow bucked the trend, gaining 140 points.
Technology stocks were among the biggest losers, with Nvidia falling nearly three percent ahead of its highly anticipated earnings report Wednesday. Micron Technology dropped nearly six percent.
Meanwhile, some pressure eased in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to four-point-seven percent, while oil prices also declined.
Investors are now looking toward Friday, when Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh speaks at the Fed’s annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, with inflation and the future direction of interest rates expected to be major focuses.

EIGHT GENESEE COUNTY SPARTANS HEADED TO ALL-STAR GAME

Eight members of the Genesee County Spartans semipro football team are headed to Virginia Beach for an all-star game Saturday.
James Brown, Logan Pike, Ryley Elliott and Tim King were nominated to represent the Northeastern Football Alliance against the TriPoint Football League.
Four more Spartans were selected as alternates: Toast Malone, Baylee Vercruysee, Delonta Curry and Jalen White.
Spartans President Tammy Hathaway will also make the trip. Kickoff is scheduled for four o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex in Virginia Beach
