Religious exemption for vaccines is being done away with in New York State as legislators voted to remove all non-medical exemptions for immunizations.
The measure was passed by both the Assembly and Senate and was quickly signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
The move comes as New York continues to grapple with the one of the biggest measles outbreaks in decades.
According to the CDC there were just over one-thousand cases of measles reported across the country since January of this year with the most recent measles death occurring in 2015.
Most of the confirmed cases have been found in Orthodox Jewish communities in Rockland County and Brooklyn.
Opponents of the measure protested in Albany ahead of the vote and are vowing to challenge the new law in court.

Genesee County Judge provides little leniency for a convicted burglar.
25 year old Christopher Sprague of Batavia appeared before Judge Charles Zambito yesterday for sentencing after admitting to burglarizing several businesses in Batavia in December.
Sprague who has prior burglary convictions didn’t get much of a break on his sentence and will serve at least three and a half years in state prison and could serve as much as seven, under the terms of his sentence.
Sprague did avoid a possible 15 years in prison if Zambito had decided to make his sentences consecutive. For more on the story check the article by our news partner The Batavian.

Fight at Thruway toll in Batavia ends in arrest for two.
State Police report the arrest of 43 year old Ann Claybourn, of West Seneca, on counts of Harassment and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. and 47 year old Scott Claybourn, of Rochester who was also arrested on charges of Assault, Criminal Mischief, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child following a domestic dispute at the Batavia Thruway tolls.
Investigation into the incident revealed that Ann Claybourn was at the Tolls for a child exchange with her ex-husband, and during the exchange, a fight broke out.
Ann allegedly punched her ex-husband multiple times and he is accused of kicking her vehicle and striking her as well, causing a laceration to her face all in front of their 15 year old daughter.
Both were released with appearance tickets for Batavia Town Court on separate dates later this month.

The International Joint Commission is expected to hold a conference call today on water levels in Lake Ontario.
According to WHAM, members will be discussing Plan 2014, which manages water levels but allows greater fluctuations within them.
If the plan is suspended or changed, any action would need the consensus of both American and Canadian officials.
Some have said Plan 2014 is responsible for devastating flooding along the shoreline.

The National Weather Service says a Lakeshore Flood Warning will be in effect for two Western New York counties today.
The advisory in Monroe and Wayne counties goes from ten this morning until ten this evening.
Forecasters say strong winds combined with high water levels in Lake
Ontario could increase the risk of lakeshore flooding on the shoreline.
Folks living in the affected areas are being urged to keep an eye on the conditions.
