Genesee County Commends Unified Response to Thruway Tour Bus Crash

Genesee County is commending the unified response of local first responders, county departments, regional partners, and state agencies following this past weekend’s tragic tour bus crash on the New York State Thruway.
The incident called every layer of the county’s emergency response system into action, underscoring the importance of preparation, planning, and collaboration.
Sheriff Joseph Graff praised deputies and dispatchers for their tireless service alongside New York State Police and regional partners, saying their teamwork and commitment to public safety were on full display.
Emergency Management Director Tim Yaeger thanked the dozens of agencies who responded, calling their courage and dedication “deeply appreciated.”
County Manager Matt Landers highlighted the professionalism shown by county departments — from law enforcement to health and social services.
And Legislative Chair Shelley Stein extended the gratitude of the County Legislature, recognizing the discipline and training that form the foundation of public safety.
Genesee County extends condolences to the victims and families, and heartfelt thanks to every individual and agency who stood together in unified service during this devastating incident.

Richmond Library Honors HLOM as Friend of the Year

The Friends of the Richmond Memorial Library have named the Holland Land Office Museum as the library’s 2025 Friend of the Year.
The museum partnered with library staff to evaluate and organize the Local History collection, with special thanks to Tyler Angora and Ryan Duffy for their expertise and dedication.
A public reception will be held at the library on Saturday, September 13th at 11 a.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Batavia Marks Overdose Awareness Day with Messages of Hope and Healing

Joanne Beck with the Batavian reports, dozens gathered at St. Anthony’s in Batavia Tuesday for Overdose Awareness Day, honoring loved ones lost and supporting those in recovery.
Pastor Erin Martin of City Church urged the community to “hook arms” and remember that no one should walk the road of addiction alone. Brandi Smith, now in recovery, shared a poem written by her late brother, Jason Lang, who died from a fentanyl overdose in 2017, reminding everyone that “there is no hero in heroin.”
Counselor Chris Budzinack told his story of addiction, incarceration, and finding faith, crediting community support for saving his life. His wife Jessica also shared her perspective, encouraging families not to give up hope while stressing the importance of safety and boundaries.
The event blended moments of grief with strength, music, and fellowship — underscoring the theme: one big family, standing together in recovery and remembrance.

Join the Wetland Hike Series today at Darien Lakes State Park for a guided walk on pond ecosystems. From 10 a.m. to noon, participants will explore the living and non-living features that make ponds unique.
The 2-to-3-mile hike begins at the Route 77 parking area — no registration required.

With the new school year about to begin, Batavia police are reminding drivers to stay alert and avoid distractions, especially around schools.
Police stress the importance of putting away your phone, minimizing conversations, avoiding eating or grooming, and keeping your eyes on the road. Drivers are also urged to obey school zone speed limits and be ready to stop for buses and pedestrians.
Police say following these simple steps will help keep students safe as they return to class next week.
