GAME DAY THREAD
Date: Tonight, Thursday, May 14, 2026
Puck Drop: 7:00 PM ET
Location: KeyBank Center — Buffalo, NY
Matchup: Buffalo Sabres vs. Montreal Canadiens
Round: Eastern Conference Second Round, Game 5
Broadcast: TNT
This series is officially a best-of-three.
After splitting the first four games, the Sabres return home tonight with a massive opportunity to swing the series back in their favor in front of what should be another insane playoff crowd at KeyBank Center. Buffalo bounced back with a huge 3-2 win in Montreal in Game 4 behind another composed defensive effort and timely scoring, tying the series at two games apiece after dropping Games 2 and 3.
Now the pressure shifts back to Buffalo — and history says this building could matter.
The Sabres were one of the NHL’s best home teams all season at 26-10-5 and have continued feeding off the atmosphere throughout this playoff run.
And honestly? This feels like the biggest Sabres home game in nearly two decades.
STORYLINES TO WATCH
Buffalo’s Bounce-Back Mentality
Tuesday’s Game 4 win may have been Buffalo’s most mature playoff performance yet.
After getting pushed around emotionally in Games 2 and 3 in Montreal, the Sabres settled things down, defended significantly better, stayed out of extended chaos, and got key saves when they needed them. Buffalo allowed just two goals in Game 4 and controlled long stretches late protecting the lead.
Zach Benson Emerging on the Big Stage
One of the breakout stories of Buffalo’s postseason continues to be Zach Benson.
Benson scored the game-winning goal in Game 4 and now has six points over his last five games. According to Buffalo’s game notes, Benson could become the first Sabres player age 21 or younger to score five goals in a playoff year since Danny Gare in 1976.
Every game, the moment looks less and less overwhelming for him.
Josh Doan Quietly Becoming a Difference-Maker
Josh Doan has been everywhere lately.
Doan enters tonight with points in five straight games and nine points in his last seven contests. His chemistry with Buffalo’s middle-six forwards has become a major reason the Sabres continue rolling four dangerous lines consistently.
The Sabres’ depth has become one of the defining differences in this postseason run.
Tage Thompson Heating Up Again
Tage Thompson has 11 points in 10 playoff games and appears to be regaining the dominant offensive form that helped Buffalo win the Atlantic Division.
Thompson has points in back-to-back games entering tonight and continues creating matchup nightmares for Montreal whenever Buffalo establishes offensive-zone possession.
When Thompson is dictating pace physically and off the rush, Buffalo looks incredibly difficult to defend.
Alex Lyon vs. Montreal’s Speed
Alex Lyon continues to give Buffalo calm, steady goaltending.
While the Canadiens have generated dangerous rush opportunities throughout the series, Lyon has consistently made the key save needed to stop momentum swings. Buffalo’s defensive structure in front of him also looked far tighter in Game 4 after a rough Game 3 performance.
Montreal still wants this series played fast and chaotic. Buffalo wants structure.
Tonight’s game could come down to whichever style wins out first.
Montreal’s Young Core Isn’t Going Away
The Canadiens continue proving this playoff run is absolutely legitimate.
Lane Hutson has been electric offensively with 10 postseason points, Nick Suzuki continues driving Montreal’s attack, and Cole Caufield remains one of the most dangerous pure shooters left in the playoffs.
Even in losses, Montreal has consistently generated offense quickly when Buffalo gets careless through the neutral zone.
There is almost zero margin for error defensively against this team.
EXPECTED GOALIE MATCHUP
Sabres: Ukko Pekka Luukkonen
Canadiens: Jakub Dobes

WHAT TO WATCH TONIGHT
The Crowd Early
KeyBank Center has completely changed games during this playoff run. If Buffalo scores first, the building could become overwhelming quickly.
Defensive Discipline
The Sabres looked significantly more composed defensively in Game 4. That structure has to continue against Montreal’s speed.
Transition Hockey
Both teams thrive off rush offense. Neutral-zone turnovers could decide this game.
Depth Scoring
Buffalo’s biggest advantage throughout the playoffs has been contributions throughout the lineup. The Sabres don’t need one line carrying them.
Emotional Control
This series has gotten nastier as it’s gone on. Staying disciplined tonight is critical.
BOTTOM LINE
Tonight feels enormous.
The Sabres regained momentum with their Game 4 win, reclaimed home ice advantage, and now return to Buffalo with a chance to put Montreal on the brink of elimination.
But the Canadiens continue proving they are absolutely capable of making this series uncomfortable. Their speed, creativity, and confidence make them dangerous every single shift.
If Buffalo controls pace defensively, gets strong goaltending again from Alex Lyon, and keeps rolling four lines effectively, the Sabres should have the edge tonight.
But if this turns into another chaotic, wide-open track meet? Montreal absolutely has the firepower to steal one on the road.
This city has waited a long time for nights like this.
Let’s see if the Sabres can take control of the series tonight.
