BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Sabres delivered one of their most complete efforts of the young season Wednesday night, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 4–2 at KeyBank Center and halting Detroit’s five-game winning streak. The victory moves Buffalo to 3–4-0 on the year.
The Sabres came out sharp, controlling play throughout the opening period and outshooting Detroit 12–5. Two early power plays came up empty, but Buffalo’s puck movement and offensive zone pressure carried over as the game went on. Rookie goaltender Colten Ellis, making his NHL debut, held steady when called upon, including a key save on Lucas Raymond late in the first to keep things even.
Detroit broke through midway through the second when J.T. Compher finished a rebound in front for a 1–0 lead. Buffalo responded with purpose. Jason Zucker tied the game on a feed from Jack Quinn, and a few minutes later Tyson Kozak gave Buffalo its first lead — also set up by Quinn. Detroit evened the score before intermission on a goal from Emmitt Finnie off a Dylan Larkin assist.
Buffalo’s special teams came through in the third period. On their fourth power play of the night, Jack Quinn buried the go-ahead goal to put the Sabres up 3–2. Not long after, Jack Doan added insurance off a pass from Ryan McLeod, sealing the win.
Ellis looked composed throughout, turning aside 27 of 29 shots to earn his first NHL victory. Buffalo outshot Detroit 31–29 and finished 1-for-5 on the power play while killing both of Detroit’s opportunities.
The Sabres will look to build on the win when they continue their homestand later this week.
