📅 Date: Tonight, Tuesday, April 28, 2026
🕢 Puck Drop: 7:30 PM ET
📍 Location: KeyBank Center — Buffalo, NY
🏒 Matchup: Buffalo Sabres vs. Boston Bruins
🎟️ Round: Eastern Conference First Round, Game 5
The Sabres have their first chance to close out a playoff series on home ice in nearly two decades tonight.
Buffalo leads the series 3–1 after a dominant Game 4 win in Boston and now returns to KeyBank Center with a chance to advance in front of the home crowd for the first time since 2007.
The Sabres were one of the NHL’s best teams at home during the regular season with 26 home wins, tied for the third-most in the league, and they’ve already shown they can bring late-game offense in this building — Buffalo has scored six third-period goals in home playoff games, the most in the NHL.
👀 Storylines to Watch
Buffalo has history on its side. The Sabres are 7-0 all-time in playoff series when leading 3-1 and are 2-0 at home in Game 5 when holding that lead.
Tonight marks their first opportunity to clinch a playoff series at home since defeating the Islanders on April 12, 2007.
A win would also give Buffalo three straight playoff victories for the first time since April 2007.
🥅 Key Players
🔵 Sabres to Watch
Alex Tuch — He has recorded a point in all four games of the series (3G, 3A). Another point would give him the first five-game playoff point streak by a Sabres skater since 2007.
Bowen Byram — Already with three goals in the series, he could tie the franchise record for the longest playoff goal streak by a Sabres defenseman if he scores again tonight.
Owen Power — An assist would tie the NHL record for the longest playoff assist streak by a defenseman to begin a career.
Peyton Krebs — Has recorded a point in every game of the series and continues to provide depth scoring.
🟡 Bruins to Watch
David Pastrnak — Leads Boston in series scoring with five points.
Morgan Geekie — A steady secondary scoring threat with four points in the series.
🚑 Injury Notes
Buffalo injuries: Sam Carrick (upper body), Justin Danforth (lower body, IR), Jiri Kulich (blood clot, IR), Josh Norris (undisclosed).
🔑 What to Watch Tonight
• The clinch opportunity — Buffalo hasn’t won a playoff series at home since 2007.
• Early momentum — The building should be electric with a chance to advance.
• Depth scoring — The Sabres’ balanced offense has fueled the 3-1 series lead.
• Boston’s pushback — Expect desperation from a Bruins team facing elimination.
🧾 Bottom Line

The Sabres hold the series lead, the crowd will be rocking, and a trip to the next round is on the line.
Let’s go Buffalo.

11:07 – Buffalo successfully kills the penalty, was a particularly strong 2 minutes for Jordan Greenway.
10:00 – Halfway through the period and it’s been a fairly equal game. Boston has had strong possession in Buffalo’s zone, but Buffalo’s defense has denied any real dangerous looks at net.
5:40 – As the period continues to wear on, both teams continue to go up and down the ice with neither side maintaining possession.
0:00 – With about 10 seconds left in the period Zucker had a breakaway, but nothing came of it. The first period ends and Buffalo leads 1-0. First period summary coming up.
1st Period Summary:
The period started out largely how you would expect, Boston down 3 games to one played with a lot of pace and intensity with their season hanging in the balance. The difference in the period was Buffalo was finally able to convert on a Power Play with a Rasmus Dahlin PP goal. Buffalo had been held scoreless with a man advantage since late March. In terms of possession, Boston had an edge in the first period as a lot of the period was played in Buffalo’s zone. Buffalo’s defense did a great job keeping anything dangerous away from the net, and the few solid opportunities that did sneak through Lyon turned away. Overall, I feel Buffalo did a good job of surviving Boston’s early push, now time to push the gas a bit more in the second period.
2nd Period:
20:00 – The opening faceoff of the second period is won by Buffalo and the period is underway.
16:40 – Early on this period Buffalo is having an easier time with zone entry and maintaining possession.
14:35 – Boston’s Hampus Lindholm has been penalized for tripping. We will get our second look of the evening at the Buffalo Power Play.
12:35 – Boston successfully kills the penalty.
10:36 – Boston’s Elias Lindholm scores. The game is tied 1-1
8:28 – Buffalo is playing sloppy this period, they need to get in front and deny Boston zone entry if they want to win tonight.
6:25 – Penalty on Buffalo’s Ryan McLeod for tripping. We’ll get our second look of the night at the Buffalo Penalty Kill.
4:25 – Buffalo successfully kills the penalty.
4:24 – Penalty on Boston’s Morgan Geekie for high sticking. We’ll get our third look of the night at the Buffalo Power Play.
2:24 – Boston successfully kills the penalty.
0:00 – The second period has concluded. Second period summary coming up.
2nd Period Summary:
The second period started with Boston really controlling the puck, zone entry, and possession. Buffalo had a hard time getting the puck away from Boston, and it felt like Buffalo was playing the first 12 minutes of the period on their heels. Boston was eventually able to take advantage scoring their lone goal of the game thus far around the halfway point of the period. Despite letting in a goal, Alex Lyon had a strong period in net fending off several high danger looks from the Boston offense. The defense for Buffalo must do a better job of staying in front in the third period. At the end of the day, if Buffalo wins they move on to the next round and this game is currently tied 1-1. These are the moments you play the game for.
3rd Period:
20:00 – The opening faceoff of the period is won by Buffalo and the third period is underway.
15:05 – Buffalo has done a better job up to this point in the period with zone entry.
15:01 – Penalty to Buffalo’s Alex Tuch for High Sticking. We will get our third look of the evening at the Buffalo Penalty Kill.
13:01 – Buffalo successfully kills the penalty.
11:30 – Buffalo is mounting a ton of pressure and gaining momentum.
7:22 – Buffalo has been applying a lot of pressure, Boston cannot withstand this for 7 minutes if Buffalo can keep it up.
0:00 – In the words of the great Rick Jeanneret, this game is going to ovvvveeeerrrrrttttttiiiiiimmmmmeeeeee.
