🔥 GAME DAY THREAD 🔥

📅 Date: Tonight, Wednesday, May 6, 2026
🕖 Puck Drop: 7:00 PM ET
📍 Location: KeyBank Center
🏒 Matchup: Buffalo Sabres vs. Montreal Canadiens
🎟️ Round: Eastern Conference Second Round, Game 1

Buffalo playoff hockey rolls on tonight — and for the first time in 27 years, the Sabres and Canadiens are meeting in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

After dispatching Boston in six games, the Sabres return home looking to keep the momentum rolling against a Montreal team that’s quickly become one of the biggest surprises in the NHL postseason. Buffalo enters the series after winning the Atlantic Division with 109 points and carrying a ton of confidence after completely controlling large stretches of the first round. Montreal, meanwhile, knocked off Tampa Bay in seven games and arrives playing fearless hockey behind one of the youngest cores left in the playoffs.

This series feels fascinating stylistically. Buffalo has been one of the NHL’s best transition and offensive teams since December, while Montreal thrives on speed, creativity, and quick-strike offense led by its young stars. There’s a very real chance this turns into one of the most entertaining series of the postseason.

And if Game 1 is anything like the atmosphere during the Boston series, KeyBank Center is going to be insane again tonight.

👀 Storylines to Watch

Buffalo enters tonight after one of the strongest five-game playoff stretches in franchise history defensively.

The Sabres allowed just four total goals over the final three games against Boston — the fewest the franchise has allowed in any three-game playoff span since May 1999. Alex Lyon has been at the center of that, posting a ridiculous .955 save percentage through his first five playoff appearances with Buffalo. According to the team’s game notes, that ties Dominik Hasek for the best five-game playoff save percentage stretch by a Sabres goaltender.

This is also a chance for Buffalo to continue building playoff momentum that honestly feels different than anything this franchise has had in a long time. The Sabres have won four straight playoff games against Montreal dating back to 1998, and a win tonight would make Buffalo the only team in NHL history with multiple playoff winning streaks of five or more games against the Canadiens.

Montreal isn’t here by accident, though. The Canadiens were outstanding late in the regular season and carried that into the playoffs against Tampa Bay. Rookie defenseman Lane Hutson has been phenomenal offensively, while Nick Suzuki and Alexandre Texier have both produced throughout the postseason.

This also feels like a huge test emotionally for Buffalo. Against Boston, the Sabres were the hungry up-and-coming team with everything to prove. Now they’re the favorite, at home, with expectations suddenly sky-high. Handling that pressure is different.

🥅 Expected Goalie Matchup

Sabres: Alex Lyon
Canadiens: Samuel Montembeault (expected)

Lyon has completely changed the tone of Buffalo’s postseason. Calm, composed, and rarely out of position, he enters Game 1 having allowed just six total goals over his last four starts. The Sabres have looked incredibly confident playing in front of him, especially defensively.

Montembeault has quietly been excellent for Montreal as well. Tampa generated plenty of chances in Round 1, but the Canadiens’ goalie consistently made the saves needed to keep momentum from flipping. If this series gets high-event offensively, both goaltenders are going to be tested constantly.

⭐ Key Players

🔵 Sabres to Watch

Tage Thompson — Buffalo’s offensive engine continues to deliver. Thompson enters the series with seven playoff points in six games and had at least one point in every regular-season matchup against Montreal. The Sabres go as he goes offensively.

Alex Tuch — Built for playoff hockey. Tuch leads Buffalo with four playoff goals and has brought physicality, leadership, and relentless pressure every night this postseason.

Bowen Byram — One of Buffalo’s biggest X-factors so far. Byram already has three playoff goals, the most by a Sabres defenseman in a five-game playoff span since Alexei Zhitnik in 1999.

Peyton Krebs — Quietly becoming one of the stories of Buffalo’s playoff run. Krebs has six points in six playoff games and continues to provide huge depth production.

🔴 Canadiens to Watch

Lane Hutson — Montreal’s rookie defenseman has been electric. He enters Game 1 with six playoff points and has completely changed the pace of games with his skating and puck movement.

Nick Suzuki — Still the engine of Montreal’s offense and one of the smartest two-way centers left in the playoffs.

Alexandre Texier — A dangerous secondary scorer who’s already got four playoff points and isn’t afraid to attack off the rush.

🚑 Injury Notes

🔵 Buffalo

  • Sam Carrick — Upper body
  • Justin Danforth — Lower body (IR)
  • Jiri Kulich — Blood clot (IR)
  • Noah Östlund — Lower body

🔴 Montreal

No major new injuries reported entering Game 1.

🔑 What to Watch Tonight

⚡ Buffalo’s Start

The Sabres have absolutely fed off the crowd during this playoff run. If Buffalo gets early pressure and the building gets loud, Montreal could be dealing with chaos quickly.

🧱 Can Buffalo Keep Defending Like This?

The offense always gets the attention, but Buffalo’s defensive structure the last week has been outstanding. Against a fast Montreal team, that discipline has to continue.

🌀 Montreal’s Young Speed

The Canadiens want this game played fast and loose. If Buffalo gets sloppy through the neutral zone, Montreal absolutely has the skill to punish it.

🎯 Depth Production

One of the biggest reasons Buffalo beat Boston was the ability to get contributions throughout the lineup. Krebs, Benson, Byram, Zucker, Doan — everybody chipped in. That depth matters even more this time of year.

🏟️ The Environment

This city waited forever for playoff hockey again, and now Buffalo is hosting a second-round game. The energy tonight should be unreal.

🧾 Bottom Line

Buffalo earned home ice, enters hotter, and looks like the more complete team right now — but Montreal is dangerous in a completely different way than Boston was.

The Canadiens have youth, speed, confidence, and nothing to lose. Buffalo has the deeper roster, the stronger defense, and the hotter goaltender entering the series.

Game 1 feels massive because it could dictate the style of the entire matchup. If Buffalo controls pace and stays disciplined defensively, the Sabres should have the edge. But if this turns into a wide-open track meet, Montreal has enough skill to make this series very uncomfortable very quickly.

Let’s go Buffalo. 🔵🦬

1st Period:

20:00 – The opening faceoff is won by Buffalo and the game is underway.

19:30 -Montreal’s Lane Hutson has been penalized 2 minutes for tripping. We will get an immediate look at the Buffalo Power Play.

17:30 – Montreal successfully kills the penalty. Buffalo only managed one shot on goal and struggled to even get the puck in the zone. A poor Power Play to start the game.

16:21 – Buffalo is playing very physical and with a mean streak early, maybe taking some lessons they learned from Boston and looking to overwhelm Montreal with physicality in Game 1.

15:29 – Josh Doan scores off a Zach Benson assist on a 2 v 1 breakaway for Buffalo. Buffalo leads 1-0

12:00 – The pace of play has slowed down a bit, both teams playing largely between the blue lines.

8:25 – Montreal’s Nick Suzuki has been penalized for tripping. We will get our second look of the night at the Buffalo Power Play.

6:34 – Ryan McLeod scores for Buffalo on the Power Play. Buffalo leads 2-0

3:00 – It’s a bit surprising to see that Montreal has outshot Buffalo this period, because this period has been all Buffalo and you can see Montreal getting frustrated.

2:02 – Buffalo’s Rasmus Dahlin has been penalized for interference. We will get our first look of the night at the Buffalo Penalty Kill.

0:43 – Nick Suzuki scores on the Power Play for Montreal to close the gap at the end of the first. Buffalo leads 2-1

0:00 – Buffalo ends the period with a 2-1 lead, first period summary coming up.

First Period Summary:

The period started with Buffalo establishing a physical presence and really establishing the tone for this game. Buffalo scored an early goal to get the lead, which combined with their early physicality was a strong start for a team that has had trouble at times the last month and a half getting out to a hot start. Around three quarters of the way through the period, Buffalo put home a Power Play Goal which has been a well documented weak link for the team and continued to dominate in possession. However, a late penalty from Dahlin opened the door for Montreal, and with a PP goal with under a minute left in the period, Montreal got just the opportunity they were looking for and stole some momentum back. There’s no question Buffalo was the better team for 18 minutes in the first period, they just can’t let the last 2 minutes rattle them and stick to what they were doing.

2nd Period:

20:00 – The opening faceoff of the second period is won by Montreal and the period is underway.

17:35 – Slower start to this period compared to the last.

16:28 – Jordan Greenway scores on a slapshot from the left circle. Buffalo leads 3-1

13:24 – Jack Quinn misses on a wide open net on a 2v1 with McLeod, could’ve really broke this game wide open.

12:47 – Kaiden Guhle has been penalized for Montreal for a crosschecking. We will get our third look of the night at the Buffalo Power Play.

10:59 – Bo Byram scores for Buffalo on the Power Play from in between the circles. Buffalo leads 4-1

10:49 – Beck Malenstyn has been penalized for Buffalo for high sticking. We will get our second look of the night at Buffalo’s Penalty Kill.

8:49 – Buffalo successfully kills the penalty.

4:09 – Alex Lyon continues to play out of his gourd.

3:29 – Kirby Dach scores as he faceplants into the ice for Montreal. Buffalo leads 4-2

0:00 – The second period concludes and Buffalo leads 4-2. Second period summary coming up.

Second Period Summary:

Despite a slower, less physical start to the period, Jordan Greenway got things going for Buffalo with a strong take from the left circle just three minutes in. Greenway’s goal gave the Buffalo 4th line a huge boost after they’ve struggled to create offense since the loss of Alex Carrick. Around the halfway point of the period, Buffalo scored their second Power Play Goal of the night, giving a Power Play that went scoreless for a month a huge boost. However, similar to the first period Montreal found a way to gather some momentum late in the period. Dach scored a Sportscenter Top 10 goal as he fell to his face somehow managing to get the puck over Lyon’s shoulder. Same thing as before, Buffalo dominated the period and can’t let that goal rattle them. If Buffalo plays like they did for most of the period, they will take a 1-0 lead in this series.

3rd Period:

20:00 – The opening faceoff of the third period is won by Montreal and the period is underway.

17:58 – Second time tonight Jack Quinn has missed on a wide open look.

15:29 – It’s been a strong start to the period despite not scoring, Buffalo has applied some serious pressure.

11:45 – Buffalo has done all you could ask for this period, they’re keeping the puck  out of harms way and making Lyon’s life easy.

6:14 – Buffalo is doing a good job of just burning this clock right now, maybe a little too timid, but so far it’s doing the trick. Realistically about 2 minutes from Montreal pulling goalie.
